Default Instructors: Cool Shirt preferences?

It is mega hot, earlier than most years here in Texas. Looking to get a mobile coolshirt system, not sure if 6 qt or 12qt? Have you tried the vest? Is it easier? Are these mobile systems too much of a pain in the *** to carry around? Do you think they pose a safety risk in the HPDE environment? Looking for thoughts from you guys that have actually tried these. Help a brother out!

I've used the cold pack vest as a driver. It helps a little. Doesn't work well with 5/6 point harness as the packs shift around. Works ok with 3pt. Keep the packs in a ice chest between uses.

I have also used the portable bag coolshirt system as a driver. I have the larger size bag and ice is mostly melted by the end of a 25-30min session. Not sure how well it would work to carry around as an instructor though, the hoses are bulky. In a street car I put it behind the passenger seat and slide the seat back and recline it to hold the bag in place. You'll need to power it, can use cig lighter if available and you have the plug. I think they are sold with just bare wires and option of the plug- at least when I got mine. I also used it in my race car zip tied to the cage, last month at COTA.

They have lithium ion batteries now, so that’s what I’m looking at (with a spare of course). Sounds like the regular old shirt as opposed to the vest then for harnesses. Thanks for the quick reply!

Duct tape it to the back of your student’s passenger seat and it should be fine.

EDIT: just realized you're looking for a mobile system for instructing in student's cars, I do not have experience with those but I'd be curious to know if they're allowed or if you have tether them down somehow.

Following --

Pre-cool shirt in my own race cars -- I used those medical freeze/therapy packs -- and stuffed it inside of my race suit. Worked well enough for 25 minutes.

Have a HPDE instructor gig with PCA @ COTA coming up in a couple weeks, might have to go hunt them down.

That’s my situation, gearing up for COTA. Come say hi, I’m easy to find with a Class C RV and the signal yellow GT3 in the paddock.
