Default Poor man's HANS

I noticed in the latest seasons of Top Gear, the guys, when they're helmet'd up for shenanigans, they're wearing probably 2" thick x 3" wide foam collars around their necks.
Anyone know what they are? Are they a poor man's HANS?

Haven't seen it but what you described are neck collars for karting.

NO BUENO

Dale Earnhardt could afford a real HANS or equivalent and took a pass.

Don't make the same mistake. Best money you can spend .

Bah, just go to WalMart and get a pool floatie, wrap it around your neck and you are good to go! To the morgue..

Neck pads are not a replacement for Hans. They very much have a place in racing.

They will minimize neck fatigue and somewhat limit neck movement but its no replacement for Hans. In an accident the G’s will pull your head so much that it can elongate your neck and the Neck Pad will not help. The Neck Pad will minimize head movement in normal acceleration and deceleration.

The neck collars are to support the weight of the helmet if your neck gets fatigued but it does nothing to prevent a basilar skull fracture. There are some less expensive options out there that are still SFI approved and offer protection. Cheap life insurance in our opinion!

Schroth Restraints
