Default Formula 1 - 2023 Season

Thought I'd start a new thread for the 2023 season as many things have already happened including, but not limited to drivers such as Fernando Alonso being released from his contract with Alpine and testing at Abu Dhabi for AM.

In other news:

Mick Schumacher and Mercedes have come to an agreement to put Mick in as reserve driver, the same role De Vries held for the team this year. His role as reserve driver will be extended to both the McLaren and Williams F1 teams as well. The announcement is forthcoming.

It’s lights out and away we go! By pure coincidence, the first ever Formula 1 Exhibition just happened to be in Madrid the same time I visited and spent 3 hours soaking in the sensory overload. Besides the fantastic history and education about the sport, without a doubt, the most chilling thing was the remains of the monocoque from Romain Grosjean’s 🔥 crash in Bahrain. Hope you enjoy the photos as much as I liked taking them.

Ross Brawn already said he is looking forward to retirement and watching F1 from his couch.

I saw that. Wonder how a guy so entrenched in F1 with all it's allure can just walk away and sit on the couch - it's gotta be tough. Depending on how many "honey dos" he has and when his wife kicks off the couch, Martin Brundle may be interviewing him on the grid at a few races in 2023.

Easy! He is 68 years old and has been in that circus for a very long time. I am sure he is over 80+ hour work weeks....

Brawn made multi-millions selling Brawn GP to Mercedes and then got hired by Liberty to work on his lifelong goal of "fixing" F1. He's done it all and has the huge bank account to prove it, a prefect time to retire.

That being said, Ferrari changes its team manager about how often my Amazon delivery driver changes. They need someone like Gunther Steiner, who will just take control, and rain hell down on anyone who doesn't comply.

Yes… I think a big difference is you have Gene Haas deciding that he trusts Gunther and giving him the backing whereas I don’t think Mattia had the same unequivocal support from above. Certainly, he made some bad decisions (his whole handling of Vettel, the 2019 engine, repeated strategy issues this year, although not directly of his making, did not seem to be addressed by him definitively). But on the other hand, Ferrari did have a strong car this year, and seemed in position to build.

At this juncture, I suspect they will be overtaken by Mercedes next year and are more likely to be a clear third best. If they start to tread water, Leclerc may start to feel his best career years are being squandered.

I have been wrong about many things though…

Binotto is a brilliant engineer, but not made for the top seat. I still believe Fred Vasseur will move over from Alfa, but reports today are that Seidl was also offered the position but declined. Whether either one is good for the high pressure top seat at Ferrari F1 is yet to be determined.

Besides the obvious strategy missteps that seemed to occur multiple times per weekend, I just don't believe Binotto has the personality to be a team principal. He's too much of a gentleman where in F1, you have to get down and role around in the mud with the other pigs. Toto Wolff, Christian Horner, Steiner, all are good at rolling around and slinging mud and by that I mean you have to play the political game as much as running your team and be more well rounded. Binotto is just not a politician in that sense and lacks that gene to get dirty.

Maybe she can multitask, speaking of politician. This is the type of personality they need, imo

I'm seeing another VER championship next year, Mercedes jumping ahead of Ferrari, and just maybe some improvement from Haas with Hulkenberg over Schumacher. Will be fun to cheer for an American with Williams, Logan Sargeant, but I don't see a lot of
change with the rest of the midfield.

Frodo out, but certainly 'not worst recent top guy'.

Arrivabene smelled of stale Marlboro, sweat and sex as far as I could tell. In fact, that may have been his primary qualification, who knows? Not judging

But yeah, time for a change.

Cheers

Matt
