Default Driver cooling in a street/track car

Has anyone used a track mat to temporarily mount a driver cooling system in a street/track car so that it can be removed after the event. Trying to find a solution that doesn't leave a mounting bracket screwed to the passenger floor, but is still secure. Car is a 997 C4S.

I have a smaller pelican cooler that i slip through the cage on my 996 and strap it down. Its wedged in real good and cant go anywhere. Its easily removed.

Years ago I used a CoolShirt bag system that was placed on the floor behind the driver seat.

Using a metal track mat to secure a cooling system to the floor should work if the mat is properly secured to the floor.

Completely different approach for your consideration but makes sense for a street/track car:

I'm going to recommend against that type of solution. I used a similar vest, and the pressure of my harness ruptured some of the gel packs, making a grand mess... Seemed like a good solution for summer track days, but it didn't work out.

I use this in my GT3:

https://coolshirt.com/product/mobilecool-lith/ (I have the 12 qt version).

I just strap it into the passenger seat with the 6-point harnesses. You could also strap it in with the standard seat belt. Battery lasts all day, but I have a spare just in case. Works great for 20-30 min DE sessions.

You could probably fab a bracket that sandwiches through the two front seat frame to chassis bolts, and come up w/ some sort of quick release to short brackets that stay there all the time so you can pop it in and out easily.

Chillout is really nice, but ducting requirements likely would not work in a removable application.

Default Cool Shirt Round Cooler

Cool Shirt also offers a round cooler designed to be strapped into the passenger seat if you don't have a passenger. Some of our customers have used the bag systems as well. Use a cigarette adapter to power it and your choice of cool water shirt.

Back in the day when my racing budget was prioritized to tires, brake pads, fuel and entry fees, I put together a cooling system from the Cool Shirt and hoses along with a homemade cooler. It was a 5-gallon Igloo and a 12-volt submersible bilge pump, with a fitting to connect the Cool Shirt hose. About $50.00 at the time. Not much more today. The quick connect fitting to connect the hose to the pump (quick connect on one end and barbed on the other.is a standard fitting available at many hardware stores. Tube of bathtub caulk to seal worked well and the 1100 gal/hour pump really did the job. In the hot southwest, the cooling made a huge difference in keeping my core temps normal and my mental focus sharp. In a 20-30 minute sprint race, I could completely melt the ice in the 5-gallon cooler. Also sitting in the grid for 10-15 minutes or longer if there was a track cleanup from oil spill was sooo much more comfortable. My cobbled together system served me well for years. The round cooler was secured to my cage with light duty ratchet straps. I had no passenger seat but the round shape could sit in a seat and be secured with straps I think.

I have a similar vest using phase change packets that freeze at approx 55 degrees. Works for a short period but not a full session.

How long did the cooling effect last with the bag system?

The hard coolers keep water cool longer than the bag systems. Depends on a lot of variables, ambient temperature, driver temperature, what size system, block ice or ice cubes, etc.

The bag insulates surprisingly well. I can usually get around 2x 25 min sessions before I have to add more ice. Keep in mind thats during the summer in the south, which is pretty hot. I have two friends who run hard coolers and they go through ice at a slightly slower rate. For the most part what melts the ice is the water warmed by your body returning to the cooler.

Coolshirt is effective if you're in the car for a long time. If the car doesn't have coolshirt and it's 90F+ I will sometimes just stuff a ziplock with ice into my suit and it helps.

Other thing that helps is hot yoga -- you get used to exertion in hot environments.
