Recognize many names on that list. Good times! Did my first DE at Mid Ohio in 1990. First club race in 1998. I stopped instructing for the same reasons you mentioned.
In 2000 I was about to buy a brand new Audi TT, which at the time, I thought was a cool car. I don't know what was wrong with me. On my computer I had my cart full of Stage 3 upgrades from APR to add a ton of more horsepower. My wife comes out of the bathroom and announces she is pregnant. I pause and give the screen one last look before closing it.
After the merriment of the moment dies down (which by the way I could not have been more happy because I love my daughter) I call up the Audi dealership and change the TT to an A4.
That is a 100% true story. The A4 much later becomes my first track car.
Did my first Porsche DE in 2000 in a 1998 Viper GTS and started actual racing with SCCA in a Spec Miata three years later. Did racing since then with SCCA and NASA and an occasional PCA DE. Ironically , even though I am a Porsche DE Instructor I will not run a Porsche DE in my own Porsche till ........................................2024! Hope to initiate my Cayman in April or May , but it will be seeing plenty of track time with other groups also.

On a different note, this month's issue of Guitar Player has an interview with Kenny Wayne Sheppard. He mentions that 2 of your pedals are always part of his road gear. I thought that was cool.
In the 1990s I was autocrossing the 74 260Z. I ran that car in SCCA and in my regional club, the Virginia Motorsports Club where in 1995 I won the combined Prepared/Modified Division, and placed 6th overall in the club of 200 participants. Life got interrupted when I went over seas for a while with work. When I came back I got distracted with buying a home and playing with motorcycles & bicycles. In 2000 I bought my 22n'd Datsun S30 chassis. The intent was to turn it into, yet another track car. While building that, I was tracking motorcycles and starting to rethink the merits of dragging a knee puck on pavement at 100mph. By 2003 I had moved into a C5 Corvette. I wasted soooo many years screwing around with Datsuns when I should have been racing. I did get to write and publish some articles, and we did manage to conduct the only comprehensive wind tunnel testing on that platform since the 70s, but looking back, I'd much rather have been racing Porsches (or anything else) than tilting those windmills. The second image was a popular meme of my final Datsun and the proclamation that it was "done". It wasn't, but I was. Sold it in 2015 and haven't looked back.

I had an 01 TT 225 with a Revo tune. I loved that car. I think it is still a beautiful design.
I did my first track event in May 1987 at MidOhio with MORPCA. I had a new 1986 944 T…with an impressive 217 HP! I started instructing for PCA in ‘89. I’ve met and maintained many good friends through this hobby/sport. I still instruct and enjoy it. I now go at least as much to see my friends at the track.

944T was one of the faster cars, at least at the DE’s I went to in the early-mid 1990’s.
I lent my Alfa Romeo GTV-6 to my wife for her first DE at Summit Point in 1994 and all she had to say was “this is not a fast car.” So, the day after we came home, she bought a 86 944T from a friend of ours and drove it as a her daily driver and DE car for three years. It was fantastic. Well balanced, plenty quick.
I’ve blocked replacing the clutch, water pump, exhaust headers and turbo from my memory though…

They are good looking cars. I was going to buy a 2000 Audi TT but wound up with a 1.8L A4, which I did wind up tuning, but with quattro, the car weighed a TON and was a slug on track.

When I bought my '87 944T I changed the timing belt and water pump myself. I learned how to do it by watching videos posted by @Van . Every night after work I would spend a couple of hours in the garage. It probably took me about ten hours getting it all done.
A few years and many track miles later the timing belt needed to be changed again, and while I thought about doing it again, I didn't have the time. I dropped it off at Speedsport Tuning at about 8am and I got a call at 10:30am asking when I wanted to pick up my car. After that I decided I shouldn't change any more timing belts.
I'm probably biased, but I think a 944 is one of the best cars to learn how to drive on track.
Well, the proper belt tension tool for the 944/944T is an investment.
I owned a shop, but part of the deal with my wife is I did the work and paid for parts if I wanted to drive it, hence the “upgrade” to the K27 when it came time…
As usual, she got the best part of the deal!
Agree that the platform is one of the best balanced, honest driving cars for this sort of thing, ever.
