My 1979 911SC Targa was the first car I ever drove on track back in 2004 but my journey started back in 1999 when one of my best friends dad took us to Sebring.
My buddy had a 1997 Honda Prelude and his dad had an NSX. At that time the NSX Club of Florida had a decent group of guys that wanted to get out on track and Weshin Chin rented Sebring for the day (might have been the very first Chin event ever). I sat in the right seat as a passenger with my friend in his Prelude and we banged around the track pretty much all day thinking we were all that (I’m sure we must’ve been terrible!) and man, it was just soooooo cool.
I can’t even imagine these days if two 17 year old kids came out to an event and just went right out on track together - no instructions or classroom - just put on a helmet and go have some fun! Times were different back then…
Fast forward 5 years and now I have my ‘79 911, I remember we drove from Gainesville on Friday afternoon up to Roebling Road for a weekend DE and we were sitting just outside the track waiting for it to go cold so we could move to the infield paddock. I think Autometrics had rented the track for Friday and they were ripping it up in a 996 Cup car - I was just in awe watching that driver blast down the front straight into turn one. I distinctly remember thinking to myself “there’s no way I’ll ever be able to replicate what he’s doing with that car!”
A friend and PCA Club Racer (he had a 944 S2 with a very stout NA engine) who was also going to be my instructor that weekend was standing right next to me and said he’d sell a kidney to get to drive that 996. I guess it’s no surprise now why I love my 996 Cup so much now - the seed was planted a looooong time ago!
Oh, and I still have the ’79 Targa!

Three Wheelin'
1974 Porsche 914 2.0L, all 90 hp of it. Taught me the importance of smoothness to maintain momentum for sure! I eventually rebuilt and modified the engine for more power. I put sway bars on the car, but it stayed stock other than that.

Race Car
was preparing a lexus is300 for my first hpde weekend but it developed an oil leak last minute so I grabbed the 951 and had a great time. Tracked the is300 for a few years but have sold that off and now track a different 951.

2004 at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in S. Beloit, IL with the PCA Chicago Region in my 2002 996.2 C2. Still using the same car today with many modifications over time. Went from being a new "high HP" car then, to a "low HP" momentum car today. Still a blast to drive today or I would have gotten a newer model. Something to be said about driving a manual on the track without nannies and just am lsd. Nothing to correct a situation but your hands amd feet.

Well, Coochas, the first car I tracked was a 1981 Maya Gold RX-7 that I destroyed mass amounts of pylons with since I lived 1 mile from the Solo Nationals site at the time ( Salina , Ks ). Ok , I fudged as I was autocrossing but I did share your love for those little rotary rockets, acquiring 5 more during the 80s and all were autocrossed. My first actual track experience with my own car was at a Viper Challenge Series Event at Road America in 1999 with a 99 Mustang Cobra. I am not counting the 3 Racing/Driving Schools I attended prior to 99, as that was all done in the various school's cars, so I will claim my first personal track exeperience was at Road America. That was followed in somewhat fast succession at National Championship for the Viper Challenge/Viper Racing League ( both part of Viper Days ) at Motorsports Ranch where the little Cobra had been switched for a bigger Snake, a 1998 Viper GTS. Surprisingly I won my Class and I have been hooked ever since, though now I end up autocrossing almost as often as I do track time ( NASA,SCCA, PCA )
