I am in the market for a hans or similar device to use with my 89 944 turbo s (race car).
I have not owned a hans before.
Car has 5 point harnesses
any suggestions where to start? should I consider used?
my current helmet is open faced does Hans work with open face?
I plan to continue instructing so this is a consideration as well.

I wouldn’t recommend an open face helmet on a race track , especially if you’re going to instruct at Mosport …
No problem installing a used Hans , as most likely they haven’t been involved in an incident and you can get them recertified.
You certainly don’t want to bounce of the wall a few times coming out of 10 in an overzealous student’s car !
I’ve been using Pyrotect helmets for over 10 years , they are reasonably priced and fit well.Got mine from Irace in Ontario.
I have never used an open face helmet on the track. I have left my visor on my closed face helmet open and been hit by a marble , ouch .... I definitely recommend a closed face helmet

any suggestions where to start? I would recommend a Simpson Hybrid S. should I consider used? IMO, no. I wouldn't unless it was still pretty new and you trusted the seller. Maybe that's just me. A new Simpson Hybrid S is not cheap though.

I plan to continue instructing so this is a consideration as well. This is why the Simpson is a better choice, IMO, than a conventional HANS. The Simpson is the only HANS that affords you protection in the right seat of a 3-point belt car, which is probably the more likely scenario for most instruction.

Unlike others here, I disagree with wearing a hybrid device in 3 point belts, as I haven't seen any crash test data to support the safety of the hybrid device in that situation. 3 point belts are a complete safety system, adding to that could be compromising the efficacy. Wear a hans with harnesses, and no device in 3 point belts imo.

Interesting. Simpson did testing with their Hybrid system with 3-point belts and supposedly automotive OEMs use the Hybrid when track testing their cars, engineers, test drivers, etc.. I have not seen results of any specific testing though.

I'd love to see that data, until then I'll stick with my Hans pro ultra lite, and no device in the rare occasions I am in 3 point belts. The other reality is any students I feel the need to right seat are very green, and very far off pace. I generally don't right seat anyone that is intermediate or above - data and video are safer and more effective here.
I picked up this car in fall (formerly owned by Jerome).It has a really nice Ohlins suspension as well as new computers etc.
I am looking to add a wing btw as well.
I go back and forth between an older style hybrid and a HANS. Hybrid style is more comfortable, but HANS is less cumbersome getting in and out of tight cars and getting on and off. Also Hybrid can leave imprint in leather after extended use. Not been a problem with short time in student cars, but noticeable wear on my race seat in my car.

I shake my head when some mention a concern about imprints or marking of the seat from a Hybrid.
I am in disbelief when some would opt for nothing but the 3-point belt and helmet (which by the way increases your chance of neck injury due to added mass at your head). When I wised up a couple years ago and got my Hybrid S, I immediately felt tremendous relief for the support it gave, without impairing my movement or vision on the track. I now have a rollbar, seats, harnesses. The Hybrid is totally ok to use in this situation; as good as a conventional HANS as far as I know.
