My second race ever - PCA or otherwise - was at Road Atlanta, which I had never driven before. No T&T, so I had to learn this 'big boy' and very intimidating track during the 3 practice sessions. I was confident I could at least figure out how to get around...
Practice 1 - going into Turn 5 I realized I left the fuel cap off the tank. Its a 914 with a stock very full tank sloshing all over and into the passenger floor boards. So I drive slowly (most would pull over and turn off the car right?) to the paddock. Never finished a lap.
Practice 2 - I break a CV joint going out of T5
Practice 3 is spent replacing the CV joint.
So I roll down to the grid for the practice starts/fun race, having never actually finished a lap so they had no time for me. "No problem" I thought, "I'll just start in the back". Then something like 15 cars show up late to the grid....and behind me!!
Note at this point I have still NEVER driven down the T11-12 hill at speed.
Green flag waves as I'm going into T10a. I have not radio, but obviously everyone behind me does and immediately swarm past me. I get to the top of the hill, under the bridge, and say "Holy Sh&t" and ride my brakes down the hill...watching the entire field enter T1 as I cross Start/Finish.
By the end of the weekend, I was 3/4 throttle down the hill and at least not embarrassing myself. Next race, I was fairly competitive and turning respectable laps.
Since then, Road Atlanta is one of my favorite tracks.
So...just do it!! There are no F1 scouts watching, so who cares? Just go have fun and challenge yourself.

Club Race Chair here again. Good to read the opinions of the racers. We are still well below break-even numbers without about a month to go. The DE numbers are down too and it is the best deal I've ever seen for track time at a great track.
I can comment on the schedule problems. It would be great to start at Sebring and work up the east coast at three or 4 week intervals - but it doesn't work that way. The tracks control their own schedules and we get what is offered. Mentioned earlier, VIR is booked every day of the year from mid-FEB to mid-DEC. The PCA race at VIR moved from JUN to MAR because the Glen moved to JUN - a week apart from VIR. Fortunately we had a DE weekend we could swap it with. The bad news is that move puts VIR three weeks before Road Atlanta.
Club racing is not a great business to be in. We're just trying to break event. Please let me know if you know any sponsors........

Registration currently sitting at 93 drivers. I thought there would be a much larger post-COTA bump.
Seems like a lot of the larger classes, like SPB and all the Cup classes, are down a bunch of cars.
911CUP can only carry so much weight!
