Peter, the overhead video above is the line I am talking about as they are driving almost a straight line from a to b.
Without the "a curbing" there, it would make it much easier for us "normal" drivers to drive that same straight line without getting the car all upset high up on the curbing in 5a, the curbing that would no longer be there.
Do I make more sense now? I know those Nascar cars are set up to handle the high unfriendly curbing much better than my car is, almost as if it's not even there, but if it's not there anymore, couldn't us regular folk now take that same line?

The overwhelming amount people slow too much, too soon. Even without having to make more of an "S" into it with the old curbing, most drivers are not able to maintain a high, consistent gSum (all forces acting on the car) through the entry.
They brake early, then modulate (or coast) in to the point where they think they can go back to the throttle. A straighter entry will help folks roll more speed deeper in the brake zone.
The slowest point for most drivers should be a couple car lengths after the first curb on the left, as they turn to the left to pick up the second curb on the left in the middle of the Bus Stop.
This will help get them there faster!

So when track records fall because of this 'no curbing,' do they count or is it a 'new' track configuration?

A Riesentoter friend passed this along:
”Using data collected from drivers’ mouthguards after the 2023 contest at Watkins Glen, the sanctioning body has determined to remove the steep curbing through the bus-stop chicane at the 2.45-mile road course.
Curb hopping triggered notable spikes in forces the drivers underwent each time they raced through the inner loop. Like Daytona, those curbs will be removed and replaced with contact pads. Different temporary strips - whether flat, an inch tall or otherwise - will be tested during a Goodyear tire test at the facility on June 26-27
Recessed rumble strips will also be implemented in the run-off section of Turn 1, an addition made in effort to limit drivers’ use of the extra pavement on driver-left of the 90-degree right-handed turn.”
Interesting that they collect data from driver’s mouthguards. I had no idea!

I have no idea. My assumption is that my friend shared the language he received from WGI.
Sounds like a good possibility. It would be very gentle on a mouthguard . No g-forces to worry about!
I’m very curious about the upcoming test in June, and what they ultimately decide to use. Maybe gbuff will get more info when he visits in the near future.
