Question race glass

any reccomendations for the best fitting race glass? I thought GT Racing looked good but don't know how it compares to AIR, MAShaw, etc.

Also, if you order carbon fiber panels, are they finished enough to clear coat only?

Thanks,
DR

Q1-- Mike Shaw's stuff is excellent.

Q2-- I'd forget about clearcoating unfinished carbon unless you want the Hot Import Nights, rice-o-rama look. Most of this composite material requires some additional finishing.

Check out Getty Design glass. Takes alot less fit to make it work. The big boy race teams use it.

You may want to check out this company.

All they sell is race glass/lexan, and they list their prices too, and they are giving free shipping for the month of December.

I'd find out if the pieces that need to be curved are heat pre-formed. Less work, better fit. Also, if you're retaining your stock window seals, remember that if you use thinner lexan, it's going to slop around in the seal. One more thing. A lexan windshield is not much lighter than glass(does your's need to be 1/4 inch like the POC rules?)and it's a pain to care for properly, scratches easily, and the optical quality goes away quickly compared to glass. Try racing it for a while, then driving into the sun. Aftermarket windshields are probably more expensive than lexan but I like them better.

If you really want to save weight on a 951, you would be well advised to conventrate on the rear hatch glass!!

Question

Tim C-
You mentioned that the weight difference between glass and lexan is not worth the hassle.
Do you (or anyone) know what the approx. weight difference is? I'm about to make the decision and I was under the impression that Lexan was much lighter. Thanks

According to GT Racing:
Front 1/4" formed lexan weighs 9#, original is 27#.
Rear 3/16" formed Lexan weighs 17#, original is 84#.
For a race car the rear is a no brainer for weight loss. On the front, although the advantage is less, 18#, there's a safety issue to consider. Glass windshields on race cars are dangerous. A debris projectile could pierce the glass like a bullet. Ever notice that professional race cars always have lexan on the front?

thats true mike but some classes don't allow for lexan windshields only for the side and back windows.

As far as safety goes, my sports racer had no windshield or roof for that matter. Safety is relative.

dr,
Wait, I'm confused...didn't you ask about race glass? If your racer has no windshield, why would you want recomendations on race glass?
I guess you have another race car. If so, does your racing class allow for lexan?
Maybe there's something else I'm missing here. When you refer to "race glass" do you mean lexan or polycarbonate, or is there a certain kind of glass that's considered "race glass"?

Hey DR, I have sold a few of the Spektr Products windshields and I can tell you they are built very well. Scott at Spektr takes time a care to build a quality product. If you have any questions fell free to send me an email.
