Default Oil coolers and lines

I have a NA 944 motor rebuilt for racing and need to add an oil cooler. In the past I've used a medium size cooler, about 8" x 8" with 10 AN lines. My question is whether there is any science to picking the oil cooler size, and the line size? Seems to me most people select a long and short cooler, but these have more pressure drop than a tall cooler with more rows. Additionally, I see people electing to go with 12 AN lines. Since all my fittings are 10 AN I'd like to stick with this size, but does it matter? (I think 10 AN is pretty close to the factory turbo line).

Lastly, does anybody have any experience with the coolers from Pegasus racing?

Thanks
timo

No affiliation of course, but I have heard good things about this kit:

The factory lines are metric. You can unscrew the metric fittings and install AN fittings. I had a turbo cooler on my n/a and it made a lot of difference. I need to add a second to my S2 and was going to get this kit. Apparently, it need some additional work for an S2 (cutting some line), but I'll probably still go this route.

I purchased my upgraded oil cooling parts from http://www.batinc.net/main.htm.
Went with (2) 13 row 235 coolers and -12AN lines.
Or, if your interested I have the turbo oil cooler and lines off my '89 available.

I just use a 951 cooler on my NA. I even reuse the 951 factory lines. It has worked well and I consider the system well balanced since it was designed by Porsche for the 951. I can only assume things like pressure drop were factored in.

To size the cooler on my racecar - I actually had a smaller one, but temps were higher than I wanted, so I both upgraded and relocated it to a cleaner airflow spot.

I went cheap on the cooler; I used a plate style, size 8.5x11", from Racer Parts Wholesale. Very inexpensive compared to most out there (IIRC they're still under $80), and extremely durable - I've stuffed that cooler into the wall and gravel a few times, without injury.

Oh, yeah - for hose size, -10 seems quite sufficient... I think I'm actually using only -8 on mine...

BAT has great service and can offer you many options. For ease of install, find the 951 oil filter base, with lines to the external cooler.

I checked the diameter of the factory lines - about 12.8mm. That's really close to 10 AN.

I'll check BAT and RW for coolers too.

Thanks for the advice.

Was it hose inside diameter?
What kind of setup you did you choose?

Yes - it's the ID. I ended up with 10-AN lines and Mocal oil cooler, about 6" x 8". I got everything from Bat Inc in FL.

One strong recommendation is to use a factory 951 oil filter mount - deletes the water to oil cooler (a maintenance problem and makes the install much cleaner. I bought one years ago and just cleaned it up really well.
