SKUSA does not require neck braces.

FIA/CIK came out last year and made them optional for Senior classes.
All Junior classes MUST wear a foam collar or neck brace (Leatt, Valhalla, EVS, etc).

I'm so used to seeing EVERYONE with neck protection, it struck me as wierd. LAKC runs under International Karting Federation rules and they (I believe) have it mandatory for everyone as I've never heard otherwise.

Even with his neck injury, he still must have the neck strength of a bull, but with a 40 car field and being "Schumacher" I've got to believe there are going to be some yahoos that are overly excited to have the chance to beat "Schumacher" touch tires and boom, a flip...

Maybe he's trying to strengthen his neck for a 2010 F1 comeback

Dumb question: How does the weight work out? Do they ballast or is MS just giving up say 80 lbs???

^^^ There is min. weight for all classes. I would guess that Schumacher has lead on his kart to make the min. weight just like everyone else.

The minimum weight for the class is probably around 385, and the kart should weight around 200...

Schuberth Helmet is not $50k. The new Arai Gp6 is available from some USA importers for $6k, its pretty close. We had a customer who ordered an F1 spec Schuberth from a friend at Ferrari F1 and it was well under $10k.

The event should be pretty nice, I've got some carbon rib protectors there with a dealer of mine from Canada.

I think what ltc was referring to is the price to make that helmet. What each F1 Driver wears as a helmet is not an off the shelf product. Each is a one off made in their car in the wind tunnel to maximise the air flow into the airbox for the engine. Because each driver has a different torso length, each is specifically made. For example a taller driver like Kubica will have a different shape than a shorter driver like Massa.

This past year I remember Webber trying 2 different helmet manufacturers and Adrian Newey wanted one of the other because of it aero tendancies. I recall reading an article on Nick Heidfeld's helmet which cost close to $80,000 to produce. Nothing is left to chance in F1.

Finally, the Schuberth helmet that Schumacher wears was specifically made after Massa's head injury where they learned what had happened in his accident and developed a new helmet design and construction to minimize that sort of impact.

IIRC, Newey preferred the Arai for aero reasons, Webber was wearing a Bell at the time.

IIRC, the $50K number was some years back and it was mentioned by Matchett during a race broadcast. I agree with Pete, I'm fairly certain Schumacher's helmet is a complete custom, same as Massa's.

There was a picture floating around somewhere of a battle tank sitting on top of a Schuberth helmet...not really sure how practical that is, but it was a cool picture.

Pete & Lewis are correct. all of F1 guys who use Schuberth helmet have had their lid custom made. After it's done though, the rest of the helmets are not that ($50k) expensive. The helmet that was made for Schumi for his "return" to F1 this season was about $20K.

It was reported over in the ekartingnews thread that Robin Miller and SpeedTV will be out at the Supernats, apparently to chat with Michael Schumacher.

That's a big deal for karting which almost never gets national media exposure (the IRL Snap On Stars of Karting series...RIP....used to be on SpeedTV under the Lucas Oil 'On The Edge' segments occasionally)
