To be clear, I do this for fun, and have no racing aspirations. I have done two local track days with a total of about 500 track miles. I'm interested in doing some more driving and absorbing more instruction. I also would like to do the driving in something as close as possible to the feel of my 993. Any thoughts on the Porsche school vs Skip Barber? I'm thinking about the 2-day schools at each. Are there others I should consider? Thanks for the input.

Some details might help. Does Porsche offer a school like Skip Barber, or are you comparing Skip Barber to a PCA track event (HPDE)? From what I hear, the pro schools like Barber offer a ton of good instruction. HPDE can be hit-or-miss.

The closest thing to your 993 is your 993, so that's always an option.

Do you want to avoid driving your car on the track? Nothing is better than learning in your own car and PCA offers the best value IMO. No idea where your are but I would imagine there are some good instructors in your (or a close) PCA Region. You can do about 10 DE days, on the track with an instructor, for what either of the schools listed cost. Hopefully someone like BostonDMD, who did both beginning and advanced Skippy schools before he started with PCA, will chime in.

Also email coochas. He's done a number of days at PDE and lots of PCA days. I've done a Skippy school. In my opinion, I would spend the money on DE days in your car.

No experience with skippy, but I have done the full PSDS course (2day,masters,masters plus). The PSDS is an excellent course, first rate instruction at a great venue (barber). I would do it again in a flash.

I have no opposition to driving my car on the track. I have, and will continue to do so. And perhaps local instruction is plenty for me, but there's only about 6 months of driving here in the inland northwest. The idea of a very concentrated 2 days of driving is intriguing, as is seeing a different track, and a different perspective. One item that gave me pause re the Porsche School is that they limit manual trans drivers to 3rd and 4th gears. That sounds a bit... lame. Thanks for the input, and I welcome more opinions!

Hi everyone, been lurking here for a while but first post. I was reading this thread and just wanted to add that I saw the Bertil Roos Racing School is holding a special 3 day school that allows you to take it in your own car at Roebling Road Raceway. I had done their 5 day school a number of years ago, the 3 day being the first 3 days of it, and you get a ton of information on how to drive in that as well as a lot of track time too. Looks like the price for it is really reasonable as well so that might be worth looking into if you want to learn.

4th in a new 997S should hit about 150MPH I would think.... and you have two days on the track?

a 997S at Barber is gonna hit 110 maybe 115 mph tops.

Sorry, didn't mean to intend that I'm better than that. I've been to 150 or so, and that likely is fast enough. 2nd gear is often nice to use though.
