Thoughts?

The remote is nice. Sorely miss that feature on the GoPro.

There's a number of hero alternatives out there

http://replayxd.com/cameras/replay-xd1080-camera/

http://contour.com/products/contour-gps

http://www.vio-pov.com/products-all/pov-hd.html

Each has it's pros and cons

I like the fact that it has a 5V car charger.

Not as durable.

For "cheap" cameras, Replay and VIO-sport are the best built, Contour-next and quite a bit less durable, GoPro-next, the rest are cheap toys.

BTW, I don't sell any of these so no skin in the game. But I see a lot of variety at the track.

What good is it if it's half price and lasts half (or less) as long? YMMV.

+1. Called the "rolling shutter" effect. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_shutter

Quite common in the less expensive cameras, which all use cheap CMOS sensors and especially obvious in the harsh NVH of a race car environment.

Other than Contour and GoPro, which let you monitor wirelessly on your iPhone?

Think that's it. That's a REALLY nice feature and a must when setting up and using multiple cams.

Only the Contour GPS ($299 + $29 ConnectView card) and the + ($499, ConnectView card included) offer iOS/Android support.

Contour comparison here: http://contour.com/products/compare_cameras

The GoPro HD Hero 2 WiFi Backpac is set to be released 3/2012 (no guarantees) and will be available for $99.95. Streaming video to an iOS device will only be available to those with a HD Hero 2, not the original HD.

More info from CES here: http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/4388...o-wi-fi-bacpac

What's the range on the wireless?
Does it work for Ipad too?
Are we talking just within car? Or could this be monitored from a distance? Pits?

==>>>> OK just read the CES blurb -- 100-300m, any IOS device

Sounds like a great way to watch the pit crew puke at our endurance races :-)

==>>>> Probably not quite yet unless you can hook up a relay network in the car!!!

EasyStart also have one with a usb cable that hooks into a 5V car charger
EasyStart Has a full package Deal Whats Included
EasyRemoteStart Cable 8ft long with on/off button
Led light / 5Volt car charger /
USB 2.0 A Male to A Female Extension Cable - 0.5 FT
USB 2.0 A Male to A Male Cable - 6 FT

Never worry about the battery going dead
I have a solution for starting your Go pro camera
when you get strapped in your car sitting on grid waiting to go out on Track and you can not reach your go pro camera.

The Easy start Remote is what you need. it will start your camera from the dash of your car it also has a led light to let you know its on. save your battery life and get more race footage on the sd card. no more sitting on grid with the camera running getting nothing start and stop the go pro camera when you the driver wants to. no more asking the Grid Marshal will you please cut my camera on for me. YOU ARE IN CONTROL
