18 years? One of racing's darkest weekends, for sure.

"Senna was 34, which means that, by F1 standards, he did not die young, just hard and a very long way from home.
Senna transcended the tiresome debate about whether race drivers are really athletes because he was something far rarer in this world than an athlete — he was a genius.
Senna could take a 1,100-pound F1 car and transform it into a living, breathing thing; a throbbing dance partner in his dangerous pas de deux.

Niki Lauda said simply, ‘He was the best driver who ever lived.’"

^^ Well put.

It is sad that racing safety had not yet advanced enough to allow him to survive that wreck. RIP

They had made leaps in safety when Senna died but his crash was the magnifier to really push safety to priority 1 in F1.

I too, remember it vividly.
He raised the level of commitment to a new level.
Interestingly, not a single bone in his body was broken.

18 years, that seems like so long ago but I remember it like it was yesterday.

Not necessarily true.

If you read Dr. Watkins' book, (he was the on-track trauma surgeon following in the chase car) he did the post incident i (I believe non autopsy like)inspection of Senna's body.
He concluded that, had the tie rod piece not penetrated Senna's helmet, he saw no other trauma to Senna's body that would have prevented him from surviving the accident.

I know this seems hard to believe given the ferocitiy of the impact, but Dr. Watkin's was world renowned for his expertise in these matters.

Still a very sad day and we tend to forget that another driver, C.Rattsenburger(spelling?) also died that weekend.
