Toyo's new RR tire

We will be using the RR as the new spec tire for Spec Miata, I was told that the compound is the same as the RA-1 it just that the construction of the side wall is different and its not going to require shaving, so I would not expect a huge difference between the RR and the RA-1.
I also agree with the post above that the compound or construction of the RA-1 had changed post tsunami. When i ran the NASA Nationals the 2011 and newer tires would grain, I found myself some good old 2007 vintage tires which were fast and held up.

Up until a few years ago (maybe 3-4), RA-1's had a treadwear of 40 as well. Toyo changed that to 100 so as not to compete with grooved slicks (Hoosiers et al) in classes use treadwear for points or classification. This was well before the Tsunami. Also, remember that the treadwear is based on an unshaved tire. Who knows what the treadwear rating of an RA-1 shaved to 4/32nds would be.
It's to early to have much experience with heat cycles. I've been told they been consistant through 18 heat cycles, but it's hard to say what that means - who was driving, what tracks, how long, and how do you define "consistant"? In my experience the really fast guys are considerably harder on tires than the mid pack guys. Getting that last 5% of performance involves a significantly more slip angle! For the RA-1's I got around 14-16 good heat cycles out of them - just short of 3 full weekends. I know that's less than average, but it provides a reference point for me to base RR wear on.
I will put a bunch of heat cycles on them this next weekend, and then run a 3 hour enduro on them at the end of the weekend. That should be a good torture test in terms of track time, but probably <10 heat cycles. Unfortunately, that is the end of the season for me, so I won't be able to see how the tire does over many short heat cycles (i.e. multiple weekends).

Doc, appreciate you posting the info, really valuable stuff. With an RA1 carcass and compound, and 4/32 tread it is basically a factory shaved RA1. There's not much of the tread block left on a RA1 at 4/32, just the two grooves. My recent experience with RA1 was tread worn to the point where they used to be getting good, barely any groove left and a nice even grain, and they got slippery and times fell off. Hopefully the new tire isn't just about balancing HC and treadwear.
After cording a few of the old RA1, they were still running strong down to the cord, I tried a set shaved to 6/32 and didn't really notice much difference in initial performance but longer life, starting at 4/32 won't give too many options.
Anyway look forward to the results.

I did not run the enduro. My gearbox started sounding like it had a helping of gravel Sunday. After looking at the drops, Neal & I have the championship sealed up already, so I elected not to thrash through a trans change, or risk blowing up the trans that was in it. It was a pretty magical weekend to that point - didn't want to screw it up!
Dan ended up running the enduro on left-over BFG's - they were free!
Kurt - you need to update your sig. - you have a 944 that moves pretty well now!
On the RA-1 issue, the tires that I shaved to 3/32nd's for Nationals were slicks starting the first race at RA. This was their 3rd weekend. I decimated the TR by over 4 seconds on them - ran a 2:42.5 (no I was not on the RR's that session!). This is under the GTS-1 (open tire) TR, and 4+ seconds under the SM TR there, so I'd say they are still fast to the cord! I am not sure they are lasting quite as long as they used to, but I'm also driving faster, so it's hard to say for sure. Still better than the other options durability wise.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I should try the RR next year.
