Transporting a Track Car South
I'm in the DC area and would like to go south to do some track events over the winter, but haven't figured out a cost-effective way to get the car down there. The car is fine to drive on the street, but I'd rather fly down there to save time (not interested in driving more than ~6 hours each way) and have the car shipped. Anyone know of options to ship the car for under say $750 round trip? The Amtrak car train is around this price for a round trip, including a passenger, but the trip is over 17 hours each way, and the train arrives in Orlanda at 9:30 am, which is too late for typical track registrations.

I once used the Auto Train to return to Florida from a track weekend at VIR. They CAREFULLY loaded the car (it rode pretty low). You're required to leave the doors unlocked during transit. We left Lorton, VA (south of DC) at 4:00 p.m. and pulled into Sanford (near Orlando) the next morning at 9:30 a.m. Had a nice dinner onboard and a good night's sleep, and was back on the road 17 hours later. Missing a camera...which was stolen from car's glove box. I also got a lecture from the grizzled old train porter when I tried to walk around the train in my stocking feet. It was an adventure.

Amtrak will take any street registed car that fits.
One other challenge is that you will need a place to STORE the car till you arrive, no? Might want to find a local "shop" that would considering holding/storing your car for you. Maybe the same issue to get the car back home? At that point, you can hire any towing/hauling company to drag it from VA to florida.
Maybe find a "co driver" for the event who will volunteer to drive the car down and back?

Thanks, thought of that just yesterday, and it may be the best way to go. Any ideas on how to find out where to rent a car at each track?

If you're going to Atlanta (Road Atlanta or Atlanta Motorsports Park) you can rent a decent track-equipped BMW e30 for $400 a weekend from David Harrison at Harrison Motorsports in Alpharetta. I rented it once - it was a blast. It's street legal so you can pick it up at his shop and drive it to the track.
