Default 225's on a 9" Wheel?

I know when you put a 245 on a 9" wheel and lay it on the ground next to a 275 on the same wheel there is a very small difference in footprint, has anyone mounted a 225 Hoosier R6 (or other R spec) on a 9" wheel? If so, and you have run wider rubber previously, what was your experience?

They may look as wide, but I think the 225 is a 225 is a 225 for tread width, right? No matter what wheel it fits on. Try to wet the tire and stamp it and I'll bet the tread width is the same no matter the wheel width.

That's too big of a wheel, I run the 225/45/15 on 8" 930 wheels on the front of my 73 and it's very nice. I guess you are thinking about fronts for the RSR (will not work on the rear of the SC for sure)... how about the 275/35/15 on the front? You can cancel your membership at the gym.

yes, but that was 225/40 x18, it was the widest wheel speced for that tire and it was very stretched.

For The Hoosier R6 line it is not recommended, their 225/45 x15 is spec'ed for a 7-8.5" wheel.

Besides that think about the tire heights, your 275/35 is a 23" od tire, the 225/45 is 22.9", at least the heights are a good match if not the widths

Gary,
As I'm sure you know, Mark H. famously uses the 225/50/15 on a 9" wheel in the back. He told me he likes the "gearing" better than the 275/35 (or 225/45).

Evan C. tested both (the 225/50 and 275/35) at Summit. IIRC, the width difference (both on 9" wheels) was about 3/4". For us rev-limited Carreras, the 225/50/15 may give us better gearing at certain tracks.

I wouldn't bother with the 245 unless you want a really tall tire (similar to your previous 17"s or 18"s).

Well, I had heard Mark H. had run 225's in a square setup but assumed they were on 8" wheels. I would like to hear from him, have to look and see if I still have his contact info.

Hey Evan, chime in!

Yep. I ran the 225/45 on my 9" BBS as well as the 275. I was most recently on the 275 but was going to go back to the 225 for my next set of tires. The 225 on a 9" wheel is a great setup.
