Default Brake Cooling Mods - 996

Looking for a way to significantly reduce brake rotor heat on track days; I've added the GT3 "ducts" but they just point air in the right direction vs directly feeding it to the rotors. I'm looking for something like this: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...rf_pg2.htm#buy, but one that's made to fit my 2003 Carrera 4S. I suppose this version could be made to fit if needed but I'd prefer something made for my car. Ideas anyone?

Don't use them so much and they won't overheat. :-)

I installed GT2 ducts which supposedly allow more air flow than GT3 ducts.

The best way is to got to 6 piston front caliper and 350mm rotors in front and move the front brakes to the rear to increase size. This will not only give you better braking but more surface area and the brakes will run much cooler.

I had the same issue on my 996 and I ended up with a great solution. Pass through from the front radiators to GT3 ducts (NOT the GT3 scoops, but the GT3 ducts). Cured all brake heat probs.

I think my pics may be offline now due to a server link, but I'll try to get that sorted out.

Interesting -- would really love to see pics and/or know parts/materials. Thanks!

That sounds like a great fix. Thanks!

I have never had an issue. I run stock calipers and Poterfield R4 pads. There are a couple of things that i did as preventative measures.

996 cup ducts -

Cut out fender liners and screened them.

Pad and Fluid selection are huge !
What pads are you using and what fluid ? I have found that Pagid Yellows with SRF are nearly impossible to overheat although the braking is not optimal but great for DE. Pagid Blacks that I race with are more aggressive and require better cooling. PF 01's and 06's seem to need more cooling too but 08s are very much like the yellows.

While it is on a Boxster and not a 996, the front rotors and calibers were the same part number back in 2000. Here are some pics of how I built air scoops out of fiberglass (tan looking things) which I bolted to the front frame rails. The scoops lined up with the "cup" stile front bumper. The scoops then were attached to flexible air ducting hose (black stuff).

We then welded a simple bracket that bolts to the upright using the same bolt that holds the rigid brake line on the upright (see the yellow headed bolt in last picture). The bracket is a simple metal pipe that the ducting attaches to with a pipe clamp and it focuses the air into the center of the rotor. This allows air into the center of the fins so it can radiate outward as the disk spins.

If you look there is a small gap between the caliper and the upright that allows access to the center of the rotor. I believe there is no other area around the upright where you can see the center of the rotor and therefore get air to.

Hope the pics come through.

Buy the way this car is for sale. sorry for the plug.

I should also say, I have run Pagid Black all four corners and Motul 660 for fluid and have never had brake fade issues running in Florida since 2004. Also…what Mark Dreyer said.
