Default Tire Advice?

(reposting from the wheel and tire forum to cast a wider net)

RL BrainTrust

I drive an 85 carrera stock for hpde events.

Was recommended by 3 different folks who know more than me to get better performance tires (currently I have street H rated tires so anything with a V rating or better will be good Im guessing).

Here are options folks have recommended : Nitto r888 or Potenza or Michelin Super Sport. I drive the car to and from track so need to have some tread.

What is a cost effective good option of these 3? Or are there any others that folks think might be better?

Thx in advance.

Been a long time since I drove my 1984 911, but for the 993, we ran the Super Sports when not running Hoosiers and they were very good.
I don't know about sizes (and gave up on cost effective years ago; sorry...)

Unless you're pretty experienced on track, I'd skip the R888 because that's a pure track tire and, frankly, not one that I like very much. If you want a dedicated track tire, I would choose something else.

For a street tire that's also pretty good on track, the Pilot Super Sports are excellent; the Bridgestone RE11A is good also.

I'm trying Hankook RS-3's tomorrow based on what guys at the track were saying. The size selection of the "version 2" RS-3s on Tirerack is a lot better than it used to be.

I've also tried RE-11A's and found them decent and relatively economical.

In the 245-40/17 size, the RE-11As are about $170 each and the 'kooks are about $155 each. My experience is based on wet and dry on the track in my '99 BMW M3.

I'm really happy with my Dunlop Direzza ZIIs. They are about as cost effective as it gets if they are still available on clearance at Tire Rack and they work fine on the street.

I think the R888 are great tires for dual purpose. great on the track. (just below the real DOT slicks, maybe a second or two, and surely a little more if full tread), but seem to last on the street as well.....

I've been really happy with the Federal RSR's that I put on my Miata earlier in the year. They're relatively sticky, communicative at the limit, and dirt cheap. Have 12 or so track day sessions, a few autocrosses and about 7000 miles on them since installation, still in good shape and they aren't bad in the wet. Then again, I'm in Austin and it doesn't rain much. http://www.onlinetires.com/search/ve...ds/page_1.html

I liked the RS-3's in the dry yesterday. Very predictable and very quiet. From an acoustic perspective they sounded like DOT-Rs. They were quieter than the Nitto NT-01. The RS-3s also have very comfortable road manners on the street.

By comparison, the RE-11As where very "chatty" with lots of squeal as one approached the limit.

I'm going to reserve final judgement on them depending on longevity.

Mike,

thanks for reporting back...hope you had a good day on track. i like hankooks in general (at least all my street tires) seem to last forever.
I've driven 9 DE's on my current set of street tires; amazed they are still holding on! hopefully are good still for one more weekend...VIR calling my name.

and really from what I've seen on rennlist so far, everyone here is very economical. Hooked? No!! its really not an addiction, i can quit any time

Thx again
A

I instructed a GT3 at Limerock Saturday, cold temps (high of 55F I believe), cold track. I was surprised to see Yoko Advan AD08Rs on it, and even more surprised of the grip! I wouldn't hesitate to run them!

I agree the AD08 is great as are the Super Sports.
One downside of the R888 is that they are LOUD. I put them on my street 911 and was happy when they wore out because they were so friggin loud. I now have Super Sports on the street machine.
