If they catch the dirtbags we should all send letters to the judge telling him/her not to be lenient. If hotels and businesses in the area want our money they need to protect "us".

I am glad that there is a happy ending. The Garners Ferry area of Columbia is pretty rough, seems to be a shooting daily. That area is the gang initiation proving ground. Glad that you didn't interupt the crime in progress. I saw the ad on Craig's List and wondered where it happened. Fits.

glad the car was recovered, hope it's not damaged too badly.
whenever possible I like to be in a room where I could see my tow rig. at least in theory I would hear/see any shenanigans and be able to respond in time.
otherwise I think the OP did everything right...keeping it attached/locked to truck, padlocks, etc.
