The Michelin rep at last year's Road America IMSA races told me that they lease the tires to all the race teams. They are considered proprietary and confidential. Michelin confiscates, and bags & tags all the tires.

that is interesting - if'n I were a competitor, I think I'd be enlisting some corner workers to grab some clag and larger bits lying about

He always needed them back after the event. One weekend I went home with them still on the bike (forgot!) and I actually turned around and drove back to the track to give them back. He wasn't kidding about ABSOLUTELY needing them back ASAP. Oops.
