Default OT: well water

We have been looking at new homes in the Puslinch area and most of the estate type homes have ‘drilled wells”. I’ve done some research on-line, but can’t find anything clear on how you ensure that the water is safe to drink day to day. Does anyone know if there are purification systems that monitor water quality?

I looked into this for my property and while i haven't drilled yet I learned that UV treatment deals with bacteria and that carbon filtering will eliminate or reduce the mineral load. My cousin had a well drilled and I think the driller must have been on drugs as the well is 600' deep and is heavy on sulfur as it's slightly shallower than hell. He has four inline filters that cleans things up and then he has a softener on it too. A friend not far from my cousins' has a well thats 80 ft deep and he also has filters and the UV lamp system and the drinking water at his place is very nice.

I lived in Carlisle for over 20 years (south of Puslinch) and it was always a concern about the water. Most of the area is supplied by aquifers which have been threatened for a long time by possible quarries. . There are a number of companies around that will check your water for safety however you have to make sure that you first have water. It is a concern when you turn on the tap one morning and nothing comes out. Do your homework on the specific area.

If you Google water issues Puslinch ON. it will give you quite a bit of info. on the area. I know Guelph has had its water issues over the years. Mike DeJong of Restoration Design in Guelph might be a good person to call, I believe he has lived in the area for years.

I hear there are some really nice estate style homes in Forest Hill and Rosedale that don't rely on wells.

Thanks guys...I appreciate the input!

We own a mansion in Forest Hill now. We are looking to downsize to a simple estate home.

All the houses in my little hood are on well water.

Conservation halton in Lowville tests it for free. They give you free testing bottles too. Never had a problem.

I'm on a well as is half of Nova Scotia. When I moved in (new build) it was tested for bacteria and arsenic/uranium. It has a water softner. I fill it up with salt every week or so. It is recommended you get your water tested annually. Other than that I don't really worry about it. To answer your question, I have no real time monitoring to ensure that the water is 'safe' but neither do the other half million people drinking well water in this province. To the best of my knowledge underground water is not where bacteria live or come from.

If you do move to a place that is on well check out what the electricity situation is like. If it's above ground or below ground. How reliable is it. It sucks to lose your power in a storm. It really sucks to lose your power in a storm and not be able to flush your toilet. Few years ago in the last place I lived I lost power for 7 days. Fun times. Because I still don't have a generator I just fill up a bath tub with water before a wind storm. That's my flush water if power gets knocked out.

The best water comes from well water. But get it tested and treat it is as necessary usually just a soft water treatment. Much better then drinking recycled GTA waste water.

That is based on some kind of fact I assume? Do you add fluoride or do your children have a good dentist?

Make a condition on purchase to have multiple samples taken at different times.

Jamie 140 said it and Rod 911 confirm how to proceed.
Water testing is completed by local s that are qualified. ie Engineers, Drillers
Testing is completed by TRCA.
They have all kinds of records. Where the wells are located. First hand knowledge as to quality.
I will send u a pm

And here's the other thing with a well.

Get a well engineer to get the flow rate for you before making an offer. Ours just gushes into the cistern.

True Story. Some dude in Kilbride (notorious for crappy wells) had a great well but decided to build his dream house directly over top. Despite numerous test holes and water witching, he NEVER found another well with sufficient flow rate and had to have water trucked twice a week.

Makes you appreciate just turning on the tap and getting water! Thanks for the thoughts everyone!

haha, yes I had a garden hose blow in the garage during a 2 week vacation. The next water bill that came in was $1600. No way to get out of it. City wanted there $. Would have costed less if I had it trucked over to them but they refused and no way to not pay them because they tie it in to property taxes so you screwed.

Bacura, like I mentioned prior. Get your water tested and treat as necessary.
