Advice for Montreal Gran Prix

got to pay to play it’s top 3 weekend in MTL. Staying off island is annoying. Even out West near the airport prices have been creeping up to downtown levels.

Forget it … there is NO parking at or near the GP site.
I’m a track worker and we have to share a parking pass with four people per vehicle to access a designated parking spot off the island , then they
take us to the track by bus.
Good luck getting there other than by the subway …
Cheers

I wonder how much I can sell my Friday Family grandstand tickets for and how that would work as we only get the actual tickets a week before the race.

But I did park in the area I highlighted in my pic last year. The qualifying was at 16:00 and I arrived around 13:00 and found spots. I do like the idea of parking a little further out and biking there though.

Very true - but in my old age (50) I’m leaning towards passing on a $5k weekend and spending a fraction of that at home and watching the race in my basement home theatre 85” TV with surround etc. To each their own of course.

I’m 37 and at that point already. I don’t mind doing a flyaway race but tickets have become so expensive for F1. Montreal works because it’s still cheap as I live near to the track. While it doesn’t cost me 5k locally a flyaway for my wife and I might. For that price I rather go on a 10 day Norway cruise.

I was planning to go to the race this year, have not been in 20 years and my son is big into F1... but after reading everyone's post I began to reminisce about the weekend... costs, crowds etc... and have decided to stay home in my comfortable surroundings. Getting soft i guess, but i would rather spend those funds as I will be paying for two on a family trip.

My very limited experience from 2002 and 2018 or 2019, don't recall. I was able to find hotel rooms at a Marriott hotel, last minute, i.e. one day before in downtown Montreal. I think it was the Residence Inn. And on points to boot. Then I got a tip from a colleague regarding very cheap accommodation in the vacant student residence of Royal Victoria College Residence, corner of Sherbrooke and University, metro station nearby. You have your own spartan room, showers and toilets common. Taking the metro to the circuit was fine, taking the metro back was a completely different affair, when I saw the crowd many thousands strong shoulder to shoulder and the mounted police watching over it I said never in a million years. It is a long walk to downtown but I did it, no way I am waiting in that mess. As I walked I kept flagging taxis going towards the circuit, they did not stop but in the end one of them did and saved me the rest of the trip.
I wanted to walk the circuit after the race but a burly 4x4 security guy told me in no uncertain terms that is not possible, I did a U-turn and went on my way. In Monaco at least I have where to spend time before they open the circuit, there is no such thing in isle Notre Dame, there is nothing there. Maybe it has changed and now you are allowed to walk if that's your thing.
Price is of course another matter but they are always sold out so it works for them. It does not work for me so I am happily watching at home on TV if I am in town

It really is a great event.
Just another anecdote. I used to live on the South shore, so a quick drive to the metro and then 1 quick stop. Even street parking was available (a few KM distance). Last year, paid parking was full and street parking a challenge.
We've moved and my plan for this year is free street parking (anywhere) near a metro stop. Probably somewhere around the market (Lionel Groulx) where I park regularly. Plus a nice spot to grab pints after the day is done.
PS - I will have a pair of Sunday race tickets for sale. Exit of the hairpin.
Cheers

Sometimes better luck around Charlevoix metro. Butttt there is a little section of Charlevoix and Notre Dame, north est corner that if you arrive early enough you can snag that’s not metered. Go have breakfast the lion then walk to the metro and the car is parked all day. Then pints after the race at the lion or 4 origines brewery. There is also Brasseur De Montréal, Messorium and Terrace Ste Ambroise. Lord William is pretty meh we have not been in a few years.
That area is my stomping ground. I took a bixi back home last year
If you have an EV you can be a jerk and clog up a charger all day. I guess arrive at 10-15% state of charge. Set charge rate at low, plug in and walk away. Idle fees at Circuit Electric are just the standard charging rate of 1$ hr. It’s an option but a jerk one and will annoy me/locals with EVs that need to charge

As Wildcat077 says - there is NO parking unless you have a super VIP pass, (FYI Wildcat - I'm with MMS) I found the best access was to stay on the northshore (far cheaper) and park at the Metro station (Longueuil) and its one stop to the track. Bicycles are NOT allowed in the park. The second benefit with the northshore is you are going away from the crowds that all want to go downtown as soon as the days events end. The line up just to get to the line up for the Metro on the way out is insane! Its far better to just stay and watch all the support series until the very end. There is a LOT of walking - not a great track for people with disabilities. The walk from the south end of the track (corners 1 & 2) meanders all over the infield up and over several bridges until you can get to the Metro station. Buy the weekend Metro pass for $19. There IS a river ferry that leaves from the port but I've never taken it. here the website: https://navettesfluviales.com/en/ Be advised that if you're partying downtown and lose track of time - the Metro closes at 1:30AM. The cab ride (or Uber) back across the bridge to the north shore (if you stay there) is expensive. Don't ask how I know this. -)

I've been to the Montreal GP a few times, and my fav grandstand area was across from the pits. You get to see so much more live action, and see the teams scuttle around prepping/executing pitstops.
Otherwise, the hairpin is pretty decent because you can see the cars entering and exiting - and can see several cars at the same time. There's not usually a ton of passing there, but you'll probably see a few spin-outs.
And definitely plan a way to access the broadcast feeds and commentary (with sound deadening headphones). They used to rent handheld units - but I suspect this is now replaced with a phone app. It really helps you follow along with what's happening in the 90% of the track you can't see. The monitors and loud speakers placed around the track are useless once the engines are running.
Have fun!
