I did an automechanic apprenticship after high school, so I do all my own work. I have not tackled a trans axle as of yet like Christien.....

At work I have access to a two hoists, air tools, speciality tools, welders...etc. I try to do everything myself. If I ever need something like a tranny rebuild that requires specific expensive tools I will most likely take it to a shop because the labour would be less than the cost of the tools.

It should be important to know that mine is an older car and as such maintenance on it is probably easier than a newer 911.

All. Except for welding. I am not experienced but learning. With the resources available today & an older car, it's not that hard. A newer car? Forget it. That's just relay swapping.

Come on, you can still replace the valve stem caps with out a hoist.......can't you?

don't forget wiper blades too...but you might need a hoist for that!

I've had my car 4 years now. I took it to Auto Select in Newmarket to Franz when I first got it and I would not trust anyone else with a P-car. It needed nothing and I've not had it looked at again. I love working on cars and you can find me wrenching almost every weekend and many times during the week on my own cars.

It may seem bad to some not having a licensed mechanic working on these cars for history reasons but I feel if you know what you are doing it is better to do it yourself. I will spend a whole afternoon doing something a mechanic will do in an hour simply because I take my time and do a very meticulous job of it. I will clean every part like new and use hand tools instead of air tools so as not to damage or put wear on fasteners etc...

Now when it would come to a valve adjustment I will take it in or a tranny rebuild, engine overhaul etc... but for brakes and stuff there's nothing like getting to know the car better than doing it yourself.

All depends on what work there nees to be done.
