Default Sports equip pre-check in required with Air Canada

Just got back from an amazing ski trip to BC

For those who travel with sports gear (eg. skiis, golf clubs, etc.) Scare Canada has a new rule ... you must pre-register your sports gear 24 hours before departure or you get whacked with a $75 surcharge per item. Details are on their website.

A friend of mine told me ahead of time, so I pre-registered. Not sure if they are policing this rule more with ski gear than say golf clubs, but the poor guy beside us on the plane did not not know about the new rule. He was travelling with his family of 5 x $75 = $375 surcharge. Nice way to start your holiday

yeah the online check-in asks you these questions. It pays to be aware for sure.

Is this just a money grab or is there some real safety issue that pre-registering sports equipment helps prevent??

Each company has procedures. It does make sense from a logistical view to know how many skis you have to stash in the belly of a plane. It never ceases to amaze me how well the luggage is matched to the passenger and how quickly and seamlessly it all happens. For me giving them a heads up is no problem.

I travel to Italy each summer to do some cycling in the alps and found out last year that all the airlines were hammering passengers a hefty surcharge for bicycles each way. It cost me an additional $395 for my bicycle.

Air Canada is a joke. I fly any other airline whenever possible.

Their slogan should be;

"Air Canada; we're not happy until you're not happy"

Cheers,
Stan
