Default Blown up 997 - My Story

So about a month ago heading down the highway car got real loud (knocking) and I lost all oil pressure. Turned the car off and coasted into a parking lot just off an exit. I'm a service manager and pretty well knew that the engine was toast. The car is 59 days out of CPO warranty (purchased for Pfaff Porsche).

Towed the car to Porsche here in ottawa (Mark Motors) to take a crack at some sort of Porsche help. Car had 110,000 KM 90 of which I have put on personally. Although I never had Porsche perform regular maintenance since I run a garage I followed the maintenance to a T. Probably better than that. Oil changes with MANN filters every 10.000 km. It has been at Porsche for the following covered under warranty. All done at Mark Motors:
-Clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder, pressure plate failed
-passenger side cylinder head gasket
-engine bay lid fan
-driver door latch
-driver inner door handle
-shift linkage
-6 coil packs, spark plugs and drive belt (the latter two I paid for)
- ++++ a few little things

After some silly service (they wanted to take the engine out before the even dropped the oil pan) I asked them to remove the oil pan and they found large chunks of non ferrous metal. That and they told me that the cylinder 3 on bank 1 was moving irregularly. They told me that to make a claim with Porsche I'd be on the hook for a $2500 engine removal and diss-assembly and they MAYBE porsche would come to the table for my estimated $22,000 engine replacement 2 months out of warranty. Cost me $500 for them to tell me this...

Saddest part is that even if they did show up, and that's a BIG IF from what the service manager at Mark told me, they MAY cover and engine and I'd still be on the hook for another $4000 in labor.

I can't afford that kinda bill. I found a used engine and I'm putting it in myself. I haven't decided if I'm going to just tear down the engine to see WTF happened or sell the core to recoup some much needed cash.

To add insult to injury, the car was riddled with Hail damage as it sat in the dealers lot. NICE! So there ya have it, my story. Despite probably being a poster child for an after waranty claim, it ain't gonna happen because my $2000 is better bet on a used engine. It's sad really because I'm 30, have owned Porsches since I was 18 and will undoubtly own more but after this experience, it won't be a newer one. Gimme an air cooled 911 any day....

My rant/bitch session is over. When it's all back together someone is gonna get a SWEET deal on a 997 if they want one. Ha ha

I thought you sold your red 997 last year?
IIRC your car is an 05, so did IMS fail?
sorry to hear of your bad experience. Did Mark motors cover the hail damage? usually a paintless dent guy can remove them.

Had IMS failure on my 02 C4S. New engine under CPO. No more water cooled NA engines for me. I'll stick to turbos.

Sorry you had to experience this. I spent a very uncomfortable 2 weeks waiting for Porsche to confirm that they would cover the cost so I know how you feel.

That sucks.

I thought hail damaged cars were considered totalled by insurors.

To OP sorry to hear.
Imhave always said the IMS is a service part (if that is the issue, sounds like it). Did my LN replacement and hopefully will motor trouble free, it is a serious flaw, but should be well known by now. Kindof like a timing belt on a honda, replace every 80k or motor can go boom. 2009 and up cars will have none of these issues.

Sorry to hear. Being so close to end of warranty I think they would cover it but your taking a chance.

Was it IMS or something else that caused it?

Not much of a rant really, just the facts.

Sorry to hear about your predicament Adam, it's a tough spot to be in. I heard and read lots of goodwill stories about PCNA taking care of customer issues (engines, wheels falling off, etc.), so I would have thought that the odds would have been good in your favor. But you're right, there is a risk.

Not sure I understand the $4000 worth of labor for an engine swap however...

Clive....you thought mine was a IMS failure too. Until someone digs deeper into this engine, everything is just guessing.

its not a wear item in my mind if you have to split tbe case to repair it not on all versions of tbe engine but some. should be a lkfetime part. but sadly hou are correct. even the ceramic bearing has a finite life span in these conditions.
