Default My 16 year old is getting his licence.. Insurance Question

Yikes ! I knew this was coming and maybe I have been living in denial, but i may have to liquidate my 996 if I can't figure this out.

We have two cars in the family (the 996 and an SUV), and I am currently the only licensed driver. My son will be getting his learners permit.

Called my broker to get a feel for what that means (i have a good relationship with them).

Since we have two cars, and only one licence in the house now, my 16 year old son will need to be a PRIMARY on one of the cars once he gets his G2. The cost to ensure him is obviously astronomical, even on the SUV.

I am wondering if there is anyone that has come across a similar problem ? He won't have his G2 for quite some time > 1year, so I have some time to figure it out. Thoughts ? I want to keep them both.

outrageous options...

1) get two separate policies ? is that legal ?
2) dump them both and get a Cayenne GTS ?, hmmm...
3) exchange wives for one with a licence ? nah..., we'll...no, i can't .

Thanks !

When I was young my dad had a signed /notorized /whatever document with the insurance company essentially saying that he was the sole driver of his car.

Problem solved if they will do something like this!

WHS

You can have your son to sign a waiver stating that he will NOT drive the car.

When I was a teenager, I signed that waiver so that I will not be covered.

Bacura, I thought of this, but I think even if i did this she would still be a newbie driver and cost a fortune, although less than a teenage boy perhaps

Waiver suggestion.. Ill check on that, perhaps this is an option..

Cuda and the Hello Kitty car...I'd rather walk !

Thanks !

Any other ideas / experiences / loop holes ?

Tell them that you store your P car away from your primary residence.

Change ownership of one vehicle ( to a family member ) so you only have one registered vehicle.

What I done with my two boys is to add them to my company policy with little or no premium change, so what that has done is to start a record of clean driving .......it would help when they'll have to get their own insurance.

That failing..................dig deep my friend !!!!

The other option would to buy a clunker for your son to drive (and be primary on). You would then have 3 cars and 2 drivers.

I have same problem 4 vehicles was just 2 drivers, wife and I. Now my son is Primary driver with a G2 on our '13 Mercedes ML350, it is by far the least expensive vehicle to have him Primary on as the insurance company goes by # of incidents for the particular vehicle and driver-male and age. I could have gotten him a cheap junker to drive but the insurance would have been 10k a year!!!! If I used a Malibu or even worse a Cruze it was 10K. I bought him a VW Tiguan which he loves, but it is still cheaper for him to be Primary on the ML which is still 5k per year!!!

Insure the pcar with Haggerty and you as only driver.
Buy a new car and insure that and SUV with your current insurance.

I just went through this. Ain't no waiver available as far as I was told, so unless my insurance company is fibbing, it no longer exists!
As Saturn suggested, I ended up doing the Haggerty thing (Lant). It was my only option - insurance as a primary driver for my son on our crappy SUV was going to be $6,500 a year!
As long as the car is 15 years old you'll be ok with Lant Silver Wheels, you may just need to get it appraised. Anything newer than that and they may not insure it as it doesn't meet their "special interest car" criteria yet. Give them a call. They're in Stouffville I think?

Well I've managed to tell my insurance that my wife can't drive manual and first they kick and scream but eventually they agree that to out me
Primary for both vehicle since I do most of the driving anyways.

Second option is to kick him out of the house

New to posting here. The waiver is available. Did this last year. My daughter and I had to sign papers stating that she would not be covered if she drove my Porsche. We own 3 cars. I'm primary on 2, my wife is primary on 1, daughter occasional. Not really a big deal, though from what I understand it helps if you have a longterm relationship with your broker.
