Default Ad History

History filling ads killing back button.

I know I’ll get torched for posting this here instead of OT but I don’t care. And before I get ragged on for still using IE just let me say, don’t bother, all the others suck just as bad in different ways.

Now to the point: Does anyone have a way to prevent these BS ads from rendering my back button useless?

This really ticks me off and rennlist is the only site where I have this problem.

Rennlist could you please be more selective on the ads you allow.

And yes, I am computer illiterate so maybe this is just my problem and no one else has issues.

Any comments?

Rant over!

I'm with you on this, absolutely maddening and it caused me to switch to Google Chrome earlier this week. Not being able to use the back button makes browsing worthless.

Look into an ad blocking plug-in...allows you to block all or select ads on any page...not sure what the name is for IE, but on the Mac it is called Ad-Block, and works wonders here on Rennlist.

Cheers!

The problem isn't consistent. Some ads generate multiple pages very rapidly. It's either an error in the coding for the ad, or a subversive way to keep the ad in your face. It's not specifically the fault of Rennlist, but rather a problem with the ad provider.

A better question is: Why are paying members getting ads? Isn't that the entire point of a paid membership to a forum?

Do these ads appear as separate floating windows on top of the browser window? Even though you have "Block popup windows" selected? If so, you may have spyware that serves ads. Even with my ad-block turned off I am not getting any popup ads, and only get the banners on top of the page on select pages.

Suggest running a spyware checker such as Ad-aware or Spybot to clean the system and then check again. Also, so-called free search bars and accelerators are renowned for installing spyware....remember, nothing useful and free on the internet is really free. Remembering back to my computer days, studies showed that a Windows XP machine would on average pick up spyware after 15 minutes online....not sure how much better the later Windows versions are.

Shawn brings up a good point, a paying Rennlist member should not be bombarded with ads...that's one of the reasons for being a member.

Boot into safe mode with networking, install, update, full scan. Repeat until nothing is found.

I am using Chrome plus a plug-in called AdBlock - very simple to add to Chrome and works very well.

What is being described is not normal ads. This is malware and will have to be cleaned.

I would agree. I have never had any issues and use Chrome, IE, and Firefox.

Sounds like a spam bot. Never an issue with Mac ( for me anyway). I have clicked on the ads and had a few windows pop up, but not from back paging

It’s not spam or a virus. It’s a “bug” in Internet Explorer that MS refuses to fix. It does not occur with other browsers. For various reasons I do not want to switch away from MS IE.

Some ads “refresh” continuously in such a way that IE logs them in history as a new page. The back button actually still works but merely returns you to the same page because history is filled with that page.

It could happen on any site if such ads exist but of all the sites I visit, rennlist is the only one where I have the issue.

It is ultimately on rennlist because they allow these ads on their site.

It appears to be coming from the BF Goodrich banner as no others seem to cause the issue.

Rennlist, please remove the problem banner or require it to be repaired.

Cheers

Denny

Floating and in-post ads have been killed. Sorry for that.

There's a thread in the help forum about the back button.
https://rennlist.com/forums/rennlist...ck-button.html

I'll move this one there too.

Best,

Wow, I didn't know anybody still uses IE.

Malwarebytes is great and free, good to pair with avast.
