I agree that rules & guidelines are a necessity. To understand completely, we are never allowed to post information about a car for sale that is not ours, as said, "for a friend"? If so, I will abide of course. But that seems to take away one of the valuable resources that RL has afforded to its members and users. I agree that the fee for membership is the cheapest advertising out there. Does that also include not being able to post about a car seen for sale on ebay, where you just saw the car & have no idea who the owner is? I've never done that I don't think, but its a regular happening in the 928 forum & seems to be simply RL'ers letting other RL'ers know of a car they came across.

To me, one of the great connections within the 928 forum is the flow of communication when forum members or users post info on a 928 for sale that they came across. I do understand the need to limit those that might use RL as a used car selling site. But in the years I've been here, there have been hundreds of good leads provided to other 928 owners of a car for sale where the poster had nothing to gain other than spreading the word to alert others on RL who might not otherwise even know about it. Especially when a 928 is listed in Craigslist in California, yet a RL'er in Virginia might be searching for a similar 928, but would otherwise never see it. It was only because a RL member out in Cally, saw it & posted the lead here that the RL'er in VA knew about it.

Is there any way to somehow allow for this to continue? Perhaps a limit per member? By disallowing any posting of any car other than our own, it greatly limits one of the valuable services that RL has provided to its members. I've posted a handful of times of 928s that I knew of for sale where the owner would never post on a forum & since they were selling their 928, saw no reason to go & join just to sell a car. Yet, to me, the value of posting of it for sale was NOT for the seller's benefit, but for my fellow RL 928ers, who might be able to get a good car and/or good deal.

One example was a few years ago when a salesman I know at Brumos Porsche was selling his '83 928. He sent out an email to his email list about it being for sale. I asked him if he wanted me to post it on RL since it reached a vast # of 928 enthusiasts. He was appreciative & so after asking Randy V if it was ok, I did. A fellow 928er on RL, down state, bought his car within 48 hours of it being posted. Now I agree that would have been cost effective advertising for the seller to pay for a year's membership. He sells Porsches for a living at a very well known dealership, I'm sure he would have no problems getting it sold. That, along with the fact that he was getting out of 928 ownership, its doubtful I could have convinced him to pay up for a membership. However, a RL member benefited by finding out about a great car at a good price. So RL provided a conduit to help a member.

About a year later, the salesman told me about a 928 he became aware of that was for sale locally by an individual. I wasn't in the market, I only went to look at it cause I'd not seen another 928 locally in a year & so I could tell others here on RL about it. Again after getting the ok from Randy V, I posted a thread about the car so others here on RL would be aware of it. Although I didn't know I was in the market, after a week or so, my wife & daughter convinced me to buy it & sell the one I owned at the time cause they liked the colors better & it had lower mileage. I still own the '85 928 that he made me aware of in repayment for my kindness in helping get the word out about his car when he was selling it.

Ok, thanks for listening, I'll shut up now! And to be safe, I'll go change out the avitar pic of the Hooters gals posing with our 928s, with something more G rated. Probably a good thing my wife chose a more subdued photo for her Rennwish calendar pose!

***"I am the great Cornholio!" Love that skit. My favorite is when he raided his friend's cupboards and ate a bunch of candy bars before attending some poetry reading. Then he drank coffee to make things worse. I swear, he looked like a volcano about to erupt. I have some old B & B shows on DVD. I watch them when I'm home sick. It's about the only thing that can make me laugh when I feel crappy.

Note some text deleted for brevity;

Mel to answer your question, mentioning a deal or interesting car for sale you have come across in one way or the other is perfectly legit as long as you are not involved on behalf of a non-member. It is as you say, a service to the community.

The old "posted for a friend" thing has been a non-no here forever. Perhaps not enforced as well as it should have been. If someone can offer a 996TT for sale (as an example), let him/her shell out a whole 17.95 and post it directly.

Best,

Don't sell out so cheap. He offered to add 6 zeros to my salary. I am going to use the raise to buy financial and auto stocks.
