I have a 2003 and mine does this sometimes....

I have a 2003 and mine does this sometimes. Happens more often if I'm rolling up to stop and shift into first before it's completely stopped. It's happens less often if it's completely stopped.

Easy fix

Move to a sunny part of the country and never put the top up. (and have another vehicle if it does rain or get's cold.)

Mine works the same way but the light goes out eventually. It may take several hours. it will not drain the battery since the light is an led and draws minimal current.

Actually looking at the design of the button cell what you are doing when you reverse the cell is to short the +/- contacts together. Possibly this could remove any stored charge in any capacitors...
