I think the side pieces important for protecting the ignition wires from direct heat off the exhaust especially re-designed (heat exchangers removed) shorter headers etc..

I use vapor blasting (very fine glass bead) for the outers of these and the engine parts but I wash very carefully and prefer to plug up anything thats internal to the engine/feed to bearing...

I have new hollow shafts but they are not much lighter...

Unless I'm missing the question I'd say it's easy especially if you have it laser cut and bent - I have installed a few on my 90 and 91 - simple L brackets and some nuts/spacers/rivnuts worked fine...
