Yes, it is possible to damage the pot if it is repeatedley turned against the end of track. If the CO stops changing when trying to set idle CO, don't turn any further.

The 6 degrees retard is not applied at idle or moderate revs at light engine load. It's purpose is the protect the engine from damage at high load and higher rpm if the sensor is detected as faulty....

Suggest you compare it with another GT as their cams do give a rougher idle than (say) an S4. That's why the idle speed is set to 775rpm on the GT rather than the S4's 675rpm.

Check there isn't a short on any of the injector plugs. If you disconnect one injector, then measure the resistance on the disconnected plug you should get 18/7 ohms about 2.5 ohms.
Not a short.
