Did you remove the nut and bolt that is holding the head to the water jacket at the front of the engine? The 8V motors have 1 or 2 bolts, I seem to remember the 16 valve having one bolt and one nut.

When I did it, I just used generic sized o-rings and oiled them up so they would slide in there. It seems like it resisted a bit but it went in there all the way.
