This isn't really a 17 vs. 18 issue. You can go just as wide with 17's. I have 245's and 315's on my 17" Fikse's.

Having said that, I'm with Mike on the preference for a 17. They ride better...

Maybe this is a silly question, but did you go over every pocket and tool in the kit? If I remember correctly, the socket was fitted over another tool and very easily missed in a casual search.

Maybe it's a general problem with Nakamichi? I have a multi CD Nak at home that stinks as well. Sounds great, but mechanicals are horrible. It also jams with CD's. Changing it out this month.
