Unhappy Wanted: 78 battery box cover

I'm looking for the battery box cover, item number 11 in the image below. I've been to the big 3 and half a dozen other places that have been recommended in the course of my quest, and have had no luck as yet. Please note that this part is different from all later model cars.

Even if you don't have one and only think you may have seen a crusty 78 in some junkyard... at this point I need any kind of lead. Please, please feel free to PM or email me, or post here.... this is driving me nuts! Who would have guessed.... a battery box cover made of unobtanium...

I need one of those, too. I just checked with Zim's in Bedford, TX and they said the cover can be special ordered (they don't stock them) and the price is $102.05. I spoke with Kirk in the parts dept. - 817-267-4451.

Were they talking about special ordering from Porsche? If so, that's about double the price I was quoted, and it will never show up... discontinued.

I've been told that the 78 battery box is too different from the newer ones for this to work. When I'm in there again this weekend I'll measure the top opening in the box itself (Item 10 above) and the relative position & spacing on the hold-down studs and post here.

BTW Steve, I just called Zim's and they said they would have to order from Porsche. Thank you though... I appreciate any and all tips/leads and will follow them wherever they lead, even if it's to a dead end.

Mark, Beth --

Are the battery box covers you have the kind that hinge to the cargo compartment floor?

MBMB, I also have a hinged door, and it seems to be in good shape. The hinges are spotwelded in place.

Are you saying that there are two battery doors on a '78?

Well, one battery DOOR, and one battery COVER. I could try to rationalize why I need the cover but I think it's more a desire for completeness on my part. To rationalize though, I can think of plenty of good reasons to have it on there, and the only negative that I can imagine may be easily addressed by putting some thumbscrews on so I won't need tools to take it off(though I carry tools).

Hey, if I'm so broke down that I have to get that far into the battery box, I could probably use the cover for a parts tray anyway. Come to think of it, that could explain its absence... It's rusting away alongside the road somewhere with some "extra" washers, screws, etc.

On my 78's the battery box lower corners are open to the elements so the battery box covers need to fit snugly and have seals to keep any exhaust or undesireable elements out of the car. Have you tried Oklahoma Foreign to see if they had one?

No, I haven't tried Oklahoma Foreign. Can you post a phone number, URL, or email?

Thx
