Default PorKen's 'Monster Garage'...

I was making a list of all the projects I'm thinking about, and I thought maybe I'd ask y'all if you'd really be interested in any of the kits, or if I should just pursue the designs.

(Kit) means I'd make a saleable product.

(Design) means I haven't made it yet, but am thinking about it off and on.

The poll is multi-choice. (I voted for the headlights and the hatch )

So far, the air-pump-assisted-crank-vent is (surprisingly to me) quite popular. I'm guessing that would cost ~$60 for a copy of my working version. This would include the vac generator, valve, hose, and sundries. (~$20 for just the vac gen, you source the rest.)

The trans oil cooler would be ~$200-250; the cooler and Aeroquip fittings/hose are the costs here. I'm planning on using a slightly different cooler, as well as moving the cooler so as to be centered under the license plate (as shown in the mockup here - so I can make the quad tips eventually).

Low votes for my pride and joy, the adjustable cam advance unit. 4 degrees of camshaft advance really wakes up the ol' 4.5! (This would be ~$100.)

The 'MOAB mod' open airbox frame would be ~$20.

I know Nicole must have voted, but who are the other orthodox 928'ers?

I have two different design goals for the projectors, both based on Hella 90mm sealed units.
* One, halogen (H9) low and high beam side by side, these would stick a bit above the headlight opening, IE not be completely inside the fender. Optional foglight in place of the US driving light.
* Two, a low beam projector slightly outside or recessed in the fender, with the high beam replacing the US driving light. The latter design would allow for an upgrade to real HID Bi-Xenon units ($1000 premium), which I would really like to have someday.

The variable cam advance would replace the housing of the tensioner and include linkage to a roller (like on my fixed advance unit). The guts of the tensioner would be stock, but there would be a small hydraulic ram to move the tensioner and cam advance pulley at the same time to change the belt length on either side of the crank at different rpms.

The plastic hatch would be a sheet of acrylic or polycarb (Lexan), formed over a steel or aluminum subframe. The whole hatch surface would be plastic, the stock outline could be painted on (but have you seen the new 911 Targa, that's cool).

The plastic sunroof lid would be similar to the hatch, clear or opaque plastic sheet over a metal subframe.
...

Of course the prices above don't include labor or profit. This is a collective, isn't it comrades?
...

Not in the poll but on my current to-do-list:
* Alcantera/ultrasuede pod cover to match suede Momo SWs.
* Leather covered aluminum panels for the doors/headliner/rear interior.
* One-coil-per-cylinder ignition system.
* Aerodynamic underbody panels.
* Plain, non-locking replacement gas cap or pop-open fuel door.
* Hood-wide cold/ram air tube
* CS style reduced wiring loom
* Pop-up air brake
* Scissor style gullwing doors
...

Thanks for your feedback!

Note: the poll is set for 30 days.

I marked all except for one choice. (Sorry Nicole)

I think it's great that you are trying to figure out performance improving designs.

The crankcase ventilation system seems to be an issue many people seem to have issues with.
So it would be good to have one simple system that works, instead of people making their
own odd setups that may or may not work...

The cam advance setup you had was really cool, and I think if it was sold as a kit,
a lot of 16v folks would consider it a worthy way of boosing their power...

Everyone talks about modding the headlights.
But a lot of people like the stock look.
So unless it looks REALLY slick, I think the market would be small.
I know I like the idea, but I am most likely looking at the Jacquemond dual setup...
Just because I do not like the look of tacked-on stuff that disrupts the look of the car too much...

Some sort of airbox mod, or system, would be cool.
But many people keep debating the functionality of those setups.
So I think either something that looks really cool, or something that works...
I really like the look of the one guy with the dual "cold air intake" tubes and dual cones.
Even though it is not the best air temp...

The trans cooler would be cool, but I do not see my own need for one.
I have one already, so why rip apart something that works?
But for a racer, or for someone without a cooler, or for someone
with leaky lines, that could be a cool fix...

It's all cool stuff.
If I could get the mocked up quad exhaust, I would like that setup,
if I knew it would not melt my gas tank!

"I think the market would be small"

I had an epiphany recently while welding up the (ridiculous) triple-tip. I realized I couldn't ever make any real money selling anything I dreamed up for my car, comparing the time spent to what I do for a living.

Realizing that I'm creating mainly to please myself freed me to stop worrying about who I'd have to please, or what I'd have to charge, and concentrate on actually designing/assembling what I want for my 928.

Perhaps I should listen to the (growing number of) creationists and quit trying to evolve my car design... Ha!

PorKen,

I like the look of the projector lamps, but I think you'd have to set the
kit price over $500 (4 lamps, hardware, lense covers). That would make
it a hard sell to most.

Only five days left on the poll!

Well, I guess the headlights are done, minus the buckets.

jorj7 - the price would be less than $400, but it appears there's little demand.

The temporary polycarbonate lenses scratch easily (duh), so I'm a little fazed on the sunroof and hatch for the moment, although I did find a place to do the heat forming if I supply the form.

I bumped my cam advance up to 5 degrees a few days ago, which I'm guessing puts the torque peak at around 3500rpm. Very nice around town. This has made me start thinking about the variable cam advance again...

Ken tell me where to send $$ and I'll buy the pump vent and the cam advance solutions anyday. Of course I run only 32V :-)

I think the problem is that most people want to just buy a finished product.
Most of your mods would be more acurately described as "kits".

Prior to the 928SP carbon fiber sway bar, with all the bent bars out there, I bet if you had made a replacement "heavy duty aluminum sway bar", ready to install, people would buy them.
Same way the Ott X-over sells well, or the RMBs.

Why?

Because they are pretty simple to install.

I bet if you made a mold of the rear s2 tail light area, and made a heat formed polycarbonate lens cover, you would sell those like hotcakes to all the pre-s4 owners. Offer smoked and clear polycarbonate, with mounting hardware included...

I'd buy a set of those, and I would also consider buying the cam advance pulley, if it was cleaner looking, perhaps an alumimum bracket, and came with instructions, etc...

What I would really like to see someone build is a drysump system for our cars.

Just my tow cents worth.

heinrich - I need a 32V car to experiment on, car to donate?
...

bcdavis,

Now that's feedback!

I gotta polish it, not make it Polish.

I guess I don't see things normal like. I tend to see things how they could be (witness the despair on my girlfriend's face as I demolish another room for remodelling).

On the cam pulley: I was going to have it made from lazercut 3/16" stainless plate steel. With instructions of course. Trouble is, you have to run without the covers, or trim them, not an easy sell. I guess I would have to make custom TB covers too.

With the air pump vac gen, I need a better looking design that replaces the bypass valve (and works on 32V cars too)...
...

Vlocity - out of my league!

PorKen,

I'm working on a couple of your "todo" items as well, but my spare time equation seems a bit more limited than yours.

All in favor of the "scissor" style gullwings - there's plenty of metal to work with and it should not be a difficult hinge to do, I just gotta get a couple extra cars to experiment on - I don't want to drive around without a door, people may stare... You thinking of doing the power assist open thing, or just gas strut balancers?

CPP could be done a coupla different ways, just depends on how hardcore you go with the engine management. I've actually designed an add-on system that works with the existing spark control, but I think one would be better served by more advanced controller units, so I doubt it'll make my agenda till summer time (with WBO2 and full mgmt).

PorKen, to get around the scratching issue you might try covering the plastic with the thin stongard material that people put on the front of their cars. Not the thick headlight stuff. A guy at work just bought an EVO 8 and they put this thin plastic on there... it's almost invisible!

Gbyron, I like gull wing and Lambo-style doors from a visual & styling POV.... but how do you get out if the car ends up on its roof?
