Dealer Charge - Am I being cheap?
I had my car in for some warranty work today and asked the dealer to set the function to lock the doors automatically at 5 MPH. The dealer informed me that there was a $50 charge to so this. I told them to forget it. I was under the impression that this was a five minute job. Am I being cheap or was this an outrageous amount for this task?

It is outrageous, but you own a Porsche, so you should not be surprised.......

There is probably some unit of time dedicated to that function in their manual somewhere. If they do it when it's in for warranty work though you might save the $20 "paperwork completion" fee or whatever they call it.

You are right, but I doubt if it took all of 5 minutes. It varies from dealer to dealer. $50 seems like a standard charge to hook you up to the PST2. That is what my dealer charges to code a replacement key with the PST2.
I know the great people at my dealer for 5 years and I tease them about prices from time to time. The bottom line - any dealer is in the business to make money.
You have no choice since the PST2 is required to program the door locks. It cost in the $8,000 - 10,000 range. Big investment for an independent shop.

$50 is not bad at all.
My Ford dealer charge $75 to check the code for a check engine light. The $75 charge will not be applicable to any work done to fix the problem.

My dealer (which has really poor customer service) did it for free. I am shocked to hear that they are trying to charge you $50. I basically read the owners manual to them in a "polite" way that it says "these options are set by the dealer according to your preferences". I asked them to turn on the OBC, the door-lock feature at 5mph, and the side-mirror tilt in reverse as well (as they are my preferences). Took them less than 10 minutes from pulling the car back to bringing it back out to me.
They have the ability to do a minor courtesy like this (and others) at thier discrection for those patrons that spend the kind of money we do on P-Cars! It just comes down to a matter of courtesy. If it is a Porsche dealer then they HAVE the PST2 tool anyway so it will not kill them (especially if the car is ALREADY in for service).
