No, it's a two part installation which is supposed to work with either analogue or digital systems including all Cayennes MOST.

A base cradle mounts to the car and links into the stereo, it provides auto mute and puts the sound thru the passenger side speaker. It uses an internal antenna mounted, I guess, with the rest, under the rear wing, and cradle adapters to cater for a whole range of phone types.

This sounds like what MB has done for their US models.

They say new cradle adapters will be released quarterly to handle new model phones.

I guess it will not be cheap but hands free is hands free and worth every penny.

My bet is Nextel isn't covered (drat) but the others are quite possible.

Not if its a radio you use as a cellphone and not the reverse, we tested both verizon and sprint and unfortunatley their 2 way sucks.

Is there an indication that Porsche will offer this option in the U.S.?

Up to now, this is a European option only.

Mike,

When you look through the details in PET, there very clearly is a separate GSM phone module for the PCMII setup. It sits iunderneath the front passenger seat. The reason it won't work in the US is that the GSM module was implemented to support only GSM900/1800 radio stacks. No GSM850/1900 for US.

If what you are describing is true, I would tend to agree with you about taking a similar approach to that of MB. That said, I sure hope Porsche does not make the same mistakes MB did by forcing all of their high-end customers into a single, NON-UPGRADEABLE and VERY EXPENSIVE (drum roll please....) TDMA PHONE! (Can you tell that I have an opinion about this?)

>>No this is the US option, not the euro mount in the console option<<

Where did you get the information about this option?

Is this option available as a retrofit to existing cars or only on new orders?

Thanks.

This was in a PCNA release I have a copy of with pix. Its supposed to retro-fittable to all post August 2001 Boxter, 911 and Cayenne.

I get the impression as it uses your phone that it is system independant. As for the $$ that was my original question.

Michael,

I assume you received your newsletter since I just received mine today and it has the 2-page article in it. Interesting article and accompanying pictures. Especially when you read the "*" footnote - "The Porsche Cell Solution may not be compatible with the Porsche Communication Management System in all 911, Boxster and Cayenne models."

When you look at the pictures, it would appear that Porsche has gone well beyond MB in their thinking...... I see cradles for the Motorola V60c, current model Nokia 6500 series and what appears to be a Tungsten W! Oh, if they will only support SmartPhones and the new Motorola MPx (my next toy!). Also, it looks like this setup will work with the CDR23 (perhaps meaning one does NOT have to have PCM-II to avail themselves of this feature!)

I'm going to have to query the Park Place folks about this.

Toby

I emailed my dealer today about it.

As for the disclaimer it sort of cuts thru the article. I am pumped that this is the way PCA is solving the problem.

Works for me.
