Default RMS-TSB today

Took car in yesterday to get the 4th RMS. This morning the service rep told me that a TSB came out and he needed to order some parts.

4 bolts for the block and 3 around the IMS.

I do not think it is a big deal???? They said the bolts hold the two halfs together it is all on days work. I do not have the pay for any of it since it is covered. I have a great service department, the best I have ever experienced. They will only do the work if the "test" is passed. If not they will go for the rebuilt.

There have been a number of TSBs about the seal issue over the years. The last one I know about came out last year. If one was issued this year can you get the date it was issued or, better yet, ask them to print out a copy.

I understand the 3 bolts. The intermediate shaft flange has a seal which is the one that can leak. The flange is bolted to the crankcase with 3 bolts. When the flange is removed to replace the seal they are supposed to use new bolts to bolt it back in place.

Oil can also leak from the rear crankcase/block bolts, and there are 4 of them.

Does not sound like anything new, but we will see.

I will find out. There is another guy that is on his 4th. The dealer is waiting to hear back from Porsche. He like I, will have the X51 done if there is the need for the rebuilt.

I will not put in the x51 until the RMS issue is over.

Holy cow! What can cause that seal to go so many times on the same car? Can this problem be aggravated by the way you drive and or shift? Just curious....Otherwise, we're all in for some nasty problems sooner or later.

Has nothing to do with how one drives, it was how it was built. It is a very small % of car with this problem as a repeat offenders, however Porsche is spending time trying to work out fixes.

There are many threads covering this issue.

In addition to the crankshaft sealing ring in the event of an oil leak in the area.

This may be an unusual problem, but I had my oil pan replaced because oil was leaking thru the bolt threads. The only difference is that the dealer called the cover itself defective.

The TSB is 1359 and is dated 2/04 for 996

The lead comments is as follows: "Examination of engines that were the subject of compaints revealed that not only the crankshaft sealing ring on the flywheel side can be the cause fo the oil loss, engine oil can also leak out past the crankcase and intermediate shaft flange bolt threads.

Since March 9, 2004 bolts with a sealant coating on the thread and head have been used during during assembly to fasten the crankcase halves in the area of the flywheel.

On vehicles manufactured prior to the above-mentioned date (see introduction), the 4 crankcase bolts and the three intermediate shaft flange bolts must be replaced in addition to the crankcase sealing ring in the event of an oil leak in the area."

ENGINES REPLACED FOR THIS REASEON UNDER WARRANTY WILL BE SUBJECT TO A CHARGE BACK AND THE ENGINE RETURNED TO THE DEALER.

Introduction of the coated fastening bolts on the crankcase: March 9, 2004 from the Engine #'s

M96.03 66 4 11022
M96.03S 68 4 02138

Part Numbers:
999 385 004 09 - New/Coated crankcase bolts, M6 x 35 (4 ea. required per vehicle)
900 385 275 09 - New/Coated bolt for intermediate shaft, M6 x 20 (3 ea. required per vehicle)
999 113 490 40 Shaft Seal" (end of quoted material)

It also states that "As of '99 (X)

The info in upper case were printed in bold letters.

It never ends, does it.

Thanks Don. We will see. I still enjoy the car and would buy it again.

I can not think of another car that I can track, auto cross and drive every day(except the two days every six months for the RMS repairs).

Mine is going into shop next week for RMS problem. Hmmm... is this the new begining of a relationship with dealer and my 996? They will be sharing a lot from now on? like taking the skins off???

I am so furious that this is happening after owning the car for less than 3 months, after replacing it my perfectly fine 02 Boxster S ...
