'Fixed Headlights V4'

Not done yet, but close. I am really impatient to have them working!


Combined turn signal and parking light next to headlamp*, under custom formed acrylic cover.

This is not the final position of the lights, they'll be a bit up, and maybe a bit back too.**

*Hella 50mm sealed low beam, H7 converted to HID.

I don't like the relocated parking/turn light. What are you doing with your standard parking/turn location? The headlight looks good there. Are you planning to put some sort of an internal shell in there to conceal the bracketry and wiring?

Ken I'd raise them, with the smaller main you have the option.

Actually, I think doubling them up like the vette or F cars would be cool...stagger them in so much as the one closer to the center is closer to the lens and the outer is further back. Once it is set (kinda) make a clay mold for a reflective backing. Smooth it out and then make a mirror image. Then fiberglass. Take your fiber glass and have it metallized (chromed), then stick it back in attach the projector lights and then you have a one off bitchin light.

I am sure you know what I am talking about.

If the signal works out as shown, I'm thinking of putting 50mm fogs in the turn signal spot.

I do want to put some sort of pan in there, but I'm waiting for the finished install before I really spend some time on it. (Maybe a formed stainless mesh?)

I will pull the lamp back a bit, and up, but I can't go too far without getting more cutoff. I should have put in a virgin cover for the pic, the old painted area skews the look.

The staggered look would be way cool, but I made the decision to go with the fake headlight look. A staggered setup would need a different formed cover, as the low and high lamps would have to be farther forward and higher, in order to clear the fender sides. The 'sight window' out of the fender is real tight. The halogen (read cheaper) 50mm is not due out until Feb, anyway, according to Hella propaganda.

A drop-in fiberglass surround with a domed cover and dual beams would be 'hot'. Body color instead of chrome seems to be where the OEM is going to lately?

The turn signal is set farther forward, my goal is to have the signal be somewhat visible from the side.

Ken: A professional car designer at the German Opel design studio once told me that cars have no straight lines anywhere. They might appear straight, maybe from some perspective, but they are always curved in some direction.

Having said that, the first thing I noticed was the straight line of the black mask you created. It appeared harsh to me - not ideal for the 928s curved shapes.

I understand that you first need to find the ideal positions of the lights, but when you have that, try to give the mask some curve, just like eyes, eye lids or brows are never straight.

You're getting there, though!

For the mock up, just go to the local dollar store and pick up a couple small stainless steel bowls and use then as the backing for the lights!

That cover is the one I installed the morning I drove to Sharktoberfest. I wanted to do a crescent, but I only had one set of covers ready, and a straight line was easiest to mask off.

Interesting about the straight lines. There certainly aren't any on the 928! Just try and make something to match any part of the car! There are compound curves everywhere you look.

Like Sterling says, they are a big install. The lamps so far back in the hole, there is probably little to no light 'fill' out to the sides. I'd rather the install be less pretty, in trade for more light.

I would like to see a bolt-in single housing that would go from the headlight hole to the bumper cover lip. But that's outside of my skill set, as yet.

Funny, I did use a 9" SS bowl, and it looked, well, like a salad bowl in my fender. (I was barely able to cut a hole for the lamp in the side of the bowl with a metal hole saw; stainless steel is tough!)

That's the flash reflection, not the light.

The signal is angled for a better view, and moves the headlamp closer to the center.

If you want a simple but decent looking shroud inside you could get a couple pieces of plastic and make what looks like the cut off bottom of a cylinder. Flat and circular/oval on the bottom. Wedge/halfmoon wraparound sides. They should be easy to make and won't be very noticable if they're black.

I'm still not a fan of the turn signal, but that headlight does look good.

I guess I don't see the reason for that clear cover as you've got it there. As I said in a different thread on those covers, why not work to the edges of the headlight opening and cover it for complete aero effect. That would also give more room to place the lights higher and more forward, gaining back some of the light cut off effect you don't like (me neither).
