For your consideration...

I ran out of quick'n'dirty engine tuning ideas; couldn't find anything more to take out for lightening; so I've been doing some exterior tuning.



The lights are 7" Hella Black Magic which look almost black when off.

The license plate is mounted on a piece of aluminum piano hinge, so it folds back after ~5MPH.

The flag mirrors are cast aluminum and weigh a couple of pounds.

There was a noticeable drop in wind noise after removing the mirror.

I always turn my head to look (for lane changes) and find most passenger side mirrors to be of little use. The only thing I miss is the reference when backing down our driveway.

My girlfriend says it looks stupid, and I'm not that happy with it, so it may go back on!

Hehe, I really like the idea of the folding license plate up front, for those that still have it mounted .

I get a lot of grief out of the revenue generators about my lack of a front plate. It is absent, of course, as a countermeasure to their nasty habit of directing a beam of monochromatic light in my direction... A swinging plate might be a good compromise.

Basicly, what do you mean by a beam of monocromatic light, and what are they trying to do with it?

Old&New/Barry Johnson - here's what the hinge looks like. It cost me <$2 including the stainless hardware, so with the 928 exchange rate, I could sell them to y'all for $80 each + shipping of course!

I like the new lights. Where did you get em? What about aerodynamics and what did you do with the stock fog lights? Do you have what looks like grilles where the old ones were? Do they really light up the road pretty good?

Gerry - I bought the lights at a local auto parts store for $250, but I've seen them on the internet for ~$220. They come with a really nice wire harness, and the lamp glass contruction is as nice as the 8" H4's. They are excellent driving lights, but are too bright to use with low-beam driving if aimed properly. I am going to put a relay so that they come on with the parking lights (for daytime/nighttime speed runs), go off with low-beams, and on again with high-beams.

The grills are good old black painted chicken wire.

I remove the (useless?) driving and fog lights and sprayed the socket flat black. The inside edge of the wire wraps around the flexy bumper material to hold the whole piece on.


For the rad intake, I used some flat steel with round wire tacked to the top and bottom, (with the chicken wire just wrapped around the round stock) and reused the stock mounting points (note 1/2" rubber spacers at spoiler). Aside from lookin' cool, it keeps a lot more trash out of the radiator.

My goal is to have a one piece turn wrap around turn signal, eventually (FotoChopped image):

Here's the side view again with the Rev-Limiter viewscreen replaced.


Side Note: I got the grey mirrors off a '80 924 at the U-Pull-It, for $18/pair!
