There was a bit of interest in the idea of updating the early tail-lights, without replacing the entire rear section with an S4 rear. People had a few ideas. I was looking at some of the sites for imports, and they have a lot of light designs. Many of them are pretty cheap. Most of these lights I used in these concept designs are $120-$200 for the pair or so... I wanted to see what looks good prior to making any inquiries, or perhaps buying a set, and starting to play around. But generally, I think the idea has merit, and looks pretty good. What do you guys think? It's not that I do not like the s4 tail-lights, it is just that replacing the whole rear is expensive, and requires a repaint. This would just involve replacing the tail-light assembly... I sent an e-mail to the place that makes these lights, to see if they might want to do a run for the 928. I'm not planning to do anything custom, except for my own car. But I wanted to toss the idea out there, and see who's interested, and maybe start the wheels in motion...

I think the stock look is better than the alternatives you just posted. I've seen a pic of a Rennlisters car where the rear lights were all sort of darke red. Really liked that look.

I own more recent cars so Im looking for an update to the S4 style I would be a customer if such a product ever arrives to the market.

Anyway I really like your concept (the first two pictures). The third one...I look and keep looking but dont like too much.

I was just fooling around in Photoshop this morning for about 2 minutes, but I think this is closer to what most early S owners are looking for. <a href="http://www.geocities.com/kwa2528" target="_blank">http://www.geocities.com/kwa2528</a> Something that looks updated Porsche, not necessarily tuner. Personally if I could get something like that in a quality bolt in product for less than $300 I would be all over it. I know it is possible, just no one has done it.

I favor the bcdavis first version, although I'd make the back-up light a thinner vertical bar of the same vertical dimention as the circles. Now how do we execute this project??

Heck, now that I see the Chucker/BrianG look I like that as well. Not my personal taste, but I do think it looks good on the car. I think we have some good choices here. Now how do we get some prototypes built so we can iron out the bugs and start updating the looks of out aging sharks? Does someone do development programs like SpeedHut for tail lights? Anyone got any connections in Hella?

Here is an S4 light modified. The key is to get the right plastic for the diffused clear section.

We have some here but not sure how it will turn out.

I can't help it, but to me the suggestions shown just demonstrate what a great job Porsche did initially.

The biggest mystery to me is why we suddenly have to cram round lenses into shapes that aren't round. Many of the new rice and chrome tail lights look like "home made" to me. Or maybe I'm getting too old to understand that look...

The only great solution I have seen was jacquemond's red and white tail lights and front lenses for the S4/GT/GTS models. Those look especially great on darker colored cars.

As always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Well, like I said, the s4 is fine.
It looks clean, and modern.
If I had an s4, I probably would not modify it.

But the taillights on the early cars DO look 80's. They look dated...

Many people with s4's have people ask them if that is a *new* Porsche...That is because the design is still futuristic. But you can't fool people on the age of an s2, if it has the sealed beam headlights, and the stock taillights... They just look 80's, not 2000's.

If it was easy, I'd just toss an s4 rear section on my car. But it is not that easy. So I was just suggesting that some kind of more modern tail-light lens could be made to fit...
