blower in engine bay runs continuously
Hi All
Any clues as to why the main blower has decided to run continuously?
I have an '87 coupe with the automatic temperature control box between the seats.
The Blower shouldn't run until I turn the rotary **** to position 1 but today it runs for no reason!
The auxiliary blowers are behaving normally....
Any and all hints welcome!!
Cheers
James

There is a microswitch that control a relay in the engine bay. I would check the relay to see if it is fused. if it is OK I woould look at the switch.
Hope this helps

I assume this only occurs when the car is running.
I don't have the automatic controls but, I believe there is a rod that connects a servo to the heater control levers. If it came loose the levers might be stuck ON. Can you push them down manually and stop the fan? If so just reconnect the rod.
Otherwise look to the control relay unit. Its under a plastic shroud at the left side of the engine compartment. Its a cigarette box sized unit with a 12 pin connector on the bottom. Easiest way to test it is to find another car with a good one and switch it. They are pricey though.
There is a temp sensor on top of the engine that will run the fan if the engine is too hot and car is turned off. I would only look at this if the fan runs with the car off.
Good luck
Andrew

Cheers Andrew.
Yes, fan only runs when ignition is on, engine cold or warm.
Will look at the tips you suggest.
I need to remove the seat to access the control box so will look at this last to see if the rods have come away.
Cheers

Looks to be a blown relay now.......
Control rods function fine.
Dgaunt, you mention the microswitch; where in the system is this switch located? In the box between the seats?
Cheers

In my car, it is below the red heat control lever. Knowing Porsche, it probably still is. I think with the automatic heating system they just added a servo control and T-stat to the older system. So, look under the heat control levers on the tunnel. If I am wrong, I? am sure someone will correct me. There is one switch for each lever and they are in parallel so it could be either one.
