Question Bought a hardtop, how to install screws?

I just bought a hard top for my Boxster on eBay. I thought I saw a thread with directions on how to install the pin screws (?terminology?) on my car since it didn't come with a hard top originally. I did a search but am not having any luck. Does anybody know where I can find directions? Even if I can't do it myself, I want to have an idea of what's involved for whoever can do it. (...NOT the dealer!)

Thanks!

You can do it, Petes Boxster board poster Sept 11, 1977. Also try search on "spin locks 101". Good luck.

We filmed the spinlock/insert install and how to adjust the hard top for one of the DVDs. Unless the seller removed the the bolts and inserts from the donnor car, you will need to by them from the dealer. Then you adjust the lever locks so that the top fits your car properly.

I have posted instructions with pictures for the insert install but I do not have a link. We do it the same was as in the Porsche bulletin.

Awesome guys, thanks. Doesn't look too daunting.

Can anyone make sense of this link?

<a href="http://www.babblers.org/board/archive.pl?read=16270" target="_blank">Spin Locks Info</a>

I found it in one of my searches, but since it's a much older post, it's not a true link anymore. Help...?

I posted it several times on the babblers board, and that is where your link comes from. Here is another on the same board from 3 years ago. http://www.babblers.org/forums/search.php?searchid=6979

Ok, I've got my spin lock inserts but haven't tried putting them in yet (going to get to that this weekend). Can you elaborate on the "adjustment" needed? It seems like they only fit one way with no "give" or ability for "adjustment"? You're not the first person I've heard this from, so I'm very curious...

Thanks.

Default adjustment

There is no adjustment for the pieces that you install in the body as far as I know. Just make sure that the left one goes on the left and the right one on the right.

You might want to consider putting some duct tape on the pinch screws to hold them to your allen wrench, if they fall off it not a good thing.

Remove the inside plastic triangle on each side of the top. You will see 5 allen bolts on each side. Those are to adjust the top to fit your car.

Ah, thanks Tool Pants.

Turboflyer I'll probably use the "plastic bag" trick that I've read about on a few sites...putting the pinch screw through one corner of a plastic sandwich bag and wrapping the rest around the allen wrench in case it falls off the screw.

Needless to say, I'll be giving myself plenty of time tomorrow morning to figure it all out.

While the plastic bag trick certainly works I found that removing the side carpet pieces makes the job much easier as you then have a nearly straight shot at the holes where the screws go. Removing the carpet pieces is a 5 minute operation. These are the carpet pieces on each side of the main piece that covers the firewall. There is one bolt by the roll bar hoop. That is it for the driver's side. For the passenger side piece there is one additional phillips screw buried in the carpet located near the bottom edge near the seam with the main firewall piece. You have to feel around for it as you wont be able to see it as it is buried in the carpet.

That is the way we did it when we filmed it. There is a 8 mm bolt and phillips screw on each trim panel. Once the panels are removed it is very easy to screw in the 2 pinch bolts with an allen bit on the end of a rachet wrench extension. No bag, tape, or magic. Plus if you are a torque guy you can torque the bolts to specs.
