Default Gamblers Run ORR results

Hello All,

I just got back from the Gamblers Run Open Road Race. There was a few
complications, but all the 928s did great. NDOT was suppose to refinish
the last 10 miles of the course on highway 225, but because of the rains,
had not finished. MKM, the race organizers had to move the start and
finish lines because of the construction. NDOT also had to cone off
a lane for 2 1/2 miles where they had only finished one lane.

Anyway Tim D (94 GTS) tied for 1st in the 125 class. This is only his 2nd
event and he and his wife Cheryl have seemed to have figured it out. They
were off by .414 seconds with a average speed of 125.020 mph.

Paul M (82S Euro) finished 1st in the 135 class. This is Paul's third 1st place
finish in 3 starts. Paul was off by .082 seconds for an amazingly close
135.005 mph average (2nd overall).

I finish 1st in the 155 class. I averaged 154.763 mph over the shorted
90.54 mile route.

Three 928s, three 1st place finishes. What a great performance.
By the way, we helped Team Porsche win 1st place in the Team
Challenge after 5 straight wins but the Corvettes.

George, awesome results! Congratulations to you, Paul, Tim & Cheryl, and Team Porsche! Paul has set the bar....only .005 mph off! Going to be hard to beat that one. Looks like the 125 mph class is owned by 928's...I've lost count of our # of 1st place finishes in this class (3 or 4 in a row?)

On a side note, I heard on the news about the helicopter crash Saturday evening. For those not familiar with Open Road Racing, a helicopter is stationed on the course during the event in case of a crash and medical emergency. This service has been provided by Access Air Ambulance. This company services the entire Northern Nevada and Southern Idaho region. Saturday night the helicopter was called to transport a mother and her 11 day old daughter from Battle Mountain to Reno. Unfortunately the crew and passengers were killed when the helicopter crashed into a mountain. Our hearts go out to the families and co-workers of those lost Saturday night, and I hope Access Air Ambulance can continue to assist us with future events.

Rich.

Given the number of 928's that live and play in the western states, it sure would be nice to have some more come out to the MKM ORR events next year. If just a couple more come we could have our own team! The ones we attend are all off of I-80 in Nevada and the drive is really not that bad. The people that attend are very friendly and treat rookies very well. The safety of the event is always uncompromised.

I know everyone has driven their sharks fast for a little while, but 100 miles. The entry fee is really no more than the ticket You get to practice all you want on friday (Cheryl & I logged 80 miles practice) and race on sunday 100 to 130 depending on event.

The 125 mph class needs minimal safety equipment (helmet, shoes, gloves, and a harness) and you can run up to 140 mph tech speed.

We are looking forward to moving up next year and play with the likes of George, Bill and Paul.

Good job 928 guys!

George, how did the car run; are you getting more boost yet?

Lag,

I'm still only getting around 3.5 psi boost. This race I could have
used the extra power from 8 psi boost. The last 10 miles were uphill
at 6500 ft elevation with a strong head wind. I wasn't able to hold
my 168 tech speed, so I could only make up 9 of the 12 seconds I
was behind. Luckily all the other participants had similar trouble,
and I was able to do better then them. Even the 160 class Supersports
were having trouble, as it was I could have beat the 3rd place 160
class car and was only .64 mph avg behind the 2nd place 1999
Nascar Pontiac.

Here are a couple of photos from the event. The first is Tim and
Cheryl's GTS behind my S4 after practice on the Northern part
of the course. We found out later that Paul was busy repairing a
oil breather hose, so he wasn't able to join us.

And here I am coming out of turn 3 (out of 32), a 160 mph left hander with elevation change:

I WILL be joining you guys soon George. Guarentee it. Ive got a 5 inch crack in my windshield right now that yet has to be fixed. Been there since i bought the car and is actually WAY down on the list of things i have to do yet. I know it has to be addressed to pass the tech for sure.

Great results, and awesome pic all hunkered down at 160mph!

928's went 3 for 3 in their classes? That's amazing. Congratulations to all, you've set a new standard.

George, did you get any video or data logs?

Dennis,

I had the Mini-DV going for the run, but I didn't get the data logger
running. Too many things to get done and not enough time.

Tony,

I got a 6 inch crack in my windshield at the Bonneville 100 last
month. I put a sticker over it and it passed tech. I wouldn't
say that's the way to approach the problem, but I called around
and couldn't get a replacement in time. Just get the car together
and come on out. The Bonneville 100 will be run on May 8th
next year, so you have plenty of time.

So do you use GPS to get an idea of what kind of average speed you are running, and whether you're ahead or behind? How does it work?

I can't address the GPS question because we don't use one. All we use are stopwatches and known mileage markers on the course (mile posts). You are given course notes with known mileage points as well as turns, bends, uphil, etc. In our class we know that 125mph average is 28.8 seconds per mile. We are allowed to go up to 140 mph to "catch up after the start or if we get behind because of turn, etc. We check the watches every 5 miles untii on time, then every minute about 10 miles from the finish. Simply multiply 28.8 times the miles to see if you are on time.

It's not really that easy or simple as it may sound, but that is the quick version.

Good job ,the format for all but unlimited class is a classic time distance rally with the object being to cover a predetermined distance at an average speed with disqualifications for going too fast or too slow. Cars are sent out with enough time between them so there should be no need for passing if both are trying for the same average speed goal . It is a great opportunity to drive at "autobahn" speeds with out risking being jailed ! The unlimited class is a time trial race and the lowest elapsed time wins. Those trying to win often do not finish since running the distance at near full speed is quite a test of the engine builders skills.
