Question says it all. Does that big potato-chip shaped plate serve any function, or can I delete it? Reinstallation will be way simpler with it gone...

It makes it easier for a thief to use a "slim Jim" and open your car which may keep them from breaking the window when they steal the radio. Besides 928s are almost NEVER stolen.

Those plates are surprisingly heavy.

Dump 'em.
