Default Smoke when you start up?

My 82 sc has 83k miles on it. If I leave it for a day or so, there is some blue smoke when I start is up. Its brief, just one puff and then gone. Its not very thick smoke, but I notice it because I am a neurotic new porche owner......

No smoke any other time, including under hard acceleration.

Something to worry about?

not really, valve guides may be leaking a bit, but you've prob got some time before its a problem

This is a common issue. Before you shut the car off, let it idle for 30 seconds or so. You can watch the gauge as the oil is pumped back into the tank, leaving less in the crankcase. This will almost eliminate the start-up smoke.

Don't worry about the smoke. This is very common. Because of the dry sump lubrication system, when you shut it off oil runs from the tank through the lines and throughout the engine. Some of it gets past the rings and it just blows off when you start it. If it smokes while you're driving you have a problem. if it only smokes on start up , forget it.

As others have said, this is more common than grass on a golf course. You only need to be worried if it doesn't go away right away.

Cool... Mine seems to do it at random too. Somedays it just purrs and no smoke. Other days I can see the puff but it does go away.

good stuff to use.... lucas oil treatment, also pick up fuel too.... this stuff works very, very good....the fuel is a lubricant, not octane additive..other than that, you have a lot of time not to worry...

If you have an issue, without doing a leakdown test, the only real way to monitor it is oil consumption. Right? Are the smoke characteristics at idle vs running rpm's different? I too see smoke but I also get some after startup while its idling. Granted, the only time I've really been out is over this winter and its hard to tell condensation from smoke sometimes.

When to start worrying is when you see blue smoke on deceleration. That is sure sign that your valve guides are gone. My 72 E had 245K miles before that happened.
