Default O2 Sensor - possible cheap replacement??

Does anyone know if these would work properly and how difficult they would be to install? Thanks.

That one is a universal 3 wire O2 sensor. As long as the original O2 is a 3 wire, it will work great. You’ll have to reuse the existing wire connector and it requires a little bit of splicing.

If you want to go even cheaper, you can replace the 3 wire with a single wire O2. The only differences are the 2 heater wires. The signal wire is the same. The heater wires are only there to heat up the sensor during a cold start. This will make the engine a little more environmentally friendly before the exhaust gases have a chance to bring the O2 sensor up to operating temperature. Essentially the heater is a more or less useless option.

Easy to install, but what brand is it? OEM is Bosch. You can get a Bosch universal for around $70 at the big 3.

I e-mailed them about brand. If the universal is $70, what do you get for $60-$80 more besides a connector when you buy the specific model year?

This looks like a 3-wire Bosch ... if you're quick. Search Bosch O2. There are many choices, and it doesn't have to be Bosch.

Do we use a three wire O2 sensor (the S4's)? Are most of the Bosch O2 sensors the same but with different connectors? If so, does anyone know the Bosch part number of an O2 sensor that we can splice into our cars that will work properly? I think the Bosch OE number is 13918 and the Bosch universal is 15735 but are there others that will work and be less expensive? Thanks.

I've been wondering about a 2000 or 2001 Jetta Bosch sensor that Napa sells for $24. I think it's planar instead of thimble, but I'm not sure.

Yes and yes .... like the one I linked to above ( that just went for $19.99): Just search for any 3-wire sensor, and splice it in. Even an AC-Delco will do the same job - and last as long. I've picked these up for as litttle as $5 new of course

Anybody know what to do with the 4th wire if you get a 4-wire? Just ground it to anything?

The 4 wire O2 are totally diffretent then the 3 or 1 wire ones. The 4 wire has 2 heater wires (just liek the 3 wire ones) and 2 signal wires. The ECM send a signal to the O2 and that is sent back by the O2 sensor. Its' sort of like a 2 way communication line instead of the 1 way that the 3 and 1 wire O2s have.

So in essence, a 3 wire is the same as a 1 wire except is has a heater. The signal is processed the same way for both sensors. The 4 wire ones are totally different from the 1 and 3....... and the 5 wire (Wide Band) are even more different that all of the other ones.

Hmm... I thought I'd read on Bosch's site that 1 wire is signal (grounded to exhaust), 2 wire is signal and ground, 3 wire is 1 wire plus heater, 4 wire is 2 wire plus heater.

Yes, the 4th wire is a sensor ground lead - replacing the sensor body thread to exhaust system pathway: more than enough detail available from Bosch

Man I love rennlist!!

You wouldn't happen to have any ideas on the Boxster ones, would you? It's a 3-wire too so would it be the same size threads, etc. as the 928?

Thanks for the fantastic info Garth!

All O2 sensors are standard size (tread, pitch, diamter, etc). Mutch like spark plugs. The main difference is the plug and the munber of wires. So in essence, all 3 wire O2s are the same just the plug at the end is different.
