Dr Mark sorry to hear that Porsche will not give you a new engine. However, it does sould like your dealer is really trying to help you out. Good luck with getting the new engine!

Sorry to hear the resolution. Had thought the dealer's effort would lead to a new engine

Moral of the story?
One sided sooting, in an otherwise normal engine, is a sinister symptom. And don't be allayed by normal compressions / normal oil consumption. I reckon most of the oil I was burning was coming from the one bad cylinder and the rest of the engine was as tight as a drum. And my compression readings were within the normal range.
Secondly Porsche now have a policy of paying for the most economic repair only under new car warranty - customer service seems a much lower priority - so get a good dealer. He or she could make all the difference.
Over and out!
Mark
Let us know how the replacement goes. Best of luck w it. Fighting the good fight here in NY. Waiting to hear back from PNA local Rep. We will see.

Hi Mark. Sorry to hear about your problems. I had a similar engine issue with my Boxster a few years ago. You should certainly get a remanufactured engine from the factory. I'll PM you now.

Samka, there are others in the same boat. If you have experience that would be of help, a board post would be appreciated. Thanks, Gerry

My 2005 997C2S (manual, coupe, RHD England) has sooty left hand side tailpipes too.

My car is currently with my Porsche dealer for tests, but I would appreciate any further comments, advise or experiences on this matter.

Left Side

Right Side

Thanks in advance.

Ronnie - on second inspection looks much the same.
am pleased to say that my dogged determination has paid off and Porsche have just said I can have one too!
Car due back next Tuesday and looking forward to breaking it in.
Thanks most go to Porsche Bristol who agreed to waive 14 hours labour to put new engine in.
I hope the rest of us get the same satisafactory result.

Dr. Mark, Ronnie;

If you wipe the tips clean how many miles/km before they the soot appears again and they look like the ones on the left hand side of the pic?

Thanks

So are you saying that Porsche finally paid for the new engine? What is your out of pocket expenses here for the new engine and diagnoses?

My friend had 40k on his Boxster S and ultimately needed an engine repair. He got Porsche to give him a new engine with labor, but he still had to pay for the diagnoses (engine tear down) to the tune of $6000 or something. He was pretty annoyed, but it was still cheaper than the engine plus labor.

WHY WOIULD HE HAVE TO PAY DIAGNOSIS ON A UNDER WARRENTY CAR?

Same here. Stop cleaning and hoping (I wish it would go away too) and get to dealer. I guess some are worse than others Ron but it needs to be fixed and hopefully Porsche will step up to the plate and do the right thing. Post your progress as we go along. Gerry
